Title: Steam Expert Required
Post by: Bacchulum on July 24, 2014, 06:56:48 PM
Can I change the location of my Assetto Corsa folder?
I need to move it onto a different drive with more space but I don't want to screw it up, and Steam and I have never got along.

I thought I'd open a thread for Steam questions, as opposed to AC, for noobs like me. :-[

I know you can move your entire steam library to another location. Don't ask me how, I just know its possible.

I looked into this a little while ago as I have a relatively small SSD and wanted move some stuff to my HDD.  Essentially there was no easy way, as even if you move the individual game over there is still a heap of other files and things associated with steam that can't be moved.

A shame.  I'd pay good money for something that could do this at the click of a button.

Nah, I've done it. You can drag and drop the files and then point Steam at the new location, or something like that. I just can't remember the details.

yeah just drag and drop. Then verify. You can change you default steam games folder. In Steam under games/settings/downloads then under Content libraries you can 'add library folder'

I moved my AC game from a hdd to my ssd lol dunno if it did anything for loading times though, still takes forever.

All the settings are stored under "Documents/Assetto Corsa" so make sure to back that up. Copy your "assettocorsa" folder to where you want it then follow Dick's instructions, the way I did it was bit different and I think Dick's way is better.

You can either move the folder and point steam to it (it's now possible)
or leave steam alone, and point to the AC folder via a junction (Junction Link Magic helps if you need a tool - command line can be a bit daunting)

I have most of my stuff on HDD, but those I need to load quick, I junction-link to my SSD - like AC :)

The advantage of the 2nd solution is that even from the file system you can follow the link from the steamapps folder, no need to scramble to find where the hell that game was installed...

Moving across now, thanks all. ;)
Turns out, where AC was is a secondary steam folder, I'm now moving it to the main one.
It's where pCars and AC Editor are so it should be straight forward.

I'll report if loading times are slower, which I expect, but at least now I should have room to get my emails from the last couple of days. :-[

OK, first of all he never said that, pop3 is available with all major email providers.
2nd how is it better to trust google, microsoft or any other "big brother" to handle your emails?
Unless you have your own server to handle your own stuff, you're actually potentially going for the worse for the questionable advantage of a permanent email addy (questionable, eg because spam will mount as time goes)

But anyway, let's get back on topic... :)

If, by verify, you mean:
right-click on game name in Library
click on properties
click 'verify integrity of game cache...'
It says 'all files successfully validated'

When I try to play I get 'Failed to start game (missing executable)

Quote
In Steam under games/settings/downloads
I don't have 'settings' under 'Games' (right at the top) so this doesn't help.
 :( :( :( :( :(

F@#k I hate Steam......

Thanks for the help Dick. 8)

Another thing i do to save room on my tiny SSD is move my user documents over to a HDD and move your page file to the HDD as well.
Nvidia, for example, stores a ton of files in C:\NVIDIA whenever you install a new driver, and that can eat up space really quickly and that's a folder you can definitely delete.
My Windows is taking up 30 gig, completely up to date.

Get a decent sized SSD, mate.  It's about 50c/ GB lately for a decent one, eg this crucial M550  512GB model

It would be nice Bird, but then I'd have to go through all that again. ::) :-X

I'm about to upgrade my pc, and bought a Samsung 250GB 840 EVO cheap, looking forward to a fresh windows install since Z97 is UEFI only and MBR disks aren't even supported to boot off, so yeah can't image the current 120gb SSD :( Will have to figure out the whole steam thing again also.

But yeh having all your my documents and downloads, videos library etc off the ssd helps with space. All of that is on a 1TB WD Green HDD. My Windows install is just over 22GB and Program Files are a bit over 33GB, that's nearly 60GB for just windows and the main programs.

Does anyone know how to reinstall a game in #@$% %$#^ Steam?
I deleted everything AC and assumed it would give me the 'Install' option but no, just a play button (then it decides there's nothing there ::))

Steam just has to make it hard.......

Try "delete local content" in that steam menu. Then the "insall game" option may come back.

Once you have deleted the game, by what ever method,
when you open stream game list and click on AC to play it will prompt you to re install.

He seems to have done that already.

Ha! I just had an idea; I reckon you can try this.

First; copy all downloaded content (steamapps/common folder) to a safe location so you don't have to re-download it all.

Make sure you delete the AC related things; (you can of course try and copy the steamapps part off as a backup to save the d/l again)
- steamapps/common/asstto corsa
- documents/assetto corsa

Then uninstall steam, restart computer, reinstall steam

Then copy the steamapps back.  When you try to play a game it'll act as if it's downloading the game, but it'll go very fast - it basically checks the local files against the online ones, downloading anything that does not match.

At this point you can either try it with the d/l'ed AC folder, or a virgin download.

I'd also contact steam support in the meantime, they take notoriously long to pick up a case.

I was lazy, I just appended "x" to the folders, that is enough for Steam NORMALLY :)

Yeah, I tried that Bruce, no install option, just a 'missing executable' message.

Thanks Gratulin, that did the trick. ;)

I had steam issue tonight for the first time in the ARSE challenge, noticed there was a steam update a day or so ago and it appears to have reset my steam settings. I had all notification stuff turned off previously as running high res triples the last thing you need is something else to take focus away from the game and make sure it staty out of window mode.

I did notice a few odd beeps here and there with quite a bit of stuttering and then eventually in race 2 my fps turned to crap goig to about 10fps. I never normally drop a single frame with full AI or MP grids and really dont use steam much so better just to keep it in offline mode I think. Here is how the settings were tonight for notifications but I made sure to disable all this stuff a while back quite annoying that it decided to reset itself and help ruin my nite a bit.

This is how I had it before the update and then no issues with the game losing focus.

I want to do this now as my C drive is nearly full but not having much luck either. Have moved my whole Steamapps folder to a different drive
but when I click on the AC icon I only get an Install option, which is 6 gig. Is there any other option rather than doing a full re-install
