From the AC forum (twitter thread):

"Marco Massarutto told in a video posted by ACItaly that within this week would be released 1.3.5 with Audi R8 Plus and some features about multiplayer latency.

About half of December will be released Dream Pack 3 with Brands Hatch laser scan and 7 new cars: Lotus 25 di Jim Clark, la Lotus 72 D, la McLaren 650 GT3, la Mercedes AMG GT3, la 500 Abarth Assetto Corsa e la Ford Escord Mk.1 (I missed last one).

Before Xmas there will be a free content and on 31st DEC will be announced a new Brand license.
That's all I know till the end of the year"

Perhaps we should have "both" as an option alongside "neither"...

There was obviously overlap when we connected as I got punted off to the left of the track.

This is a really good summation of racing rules that everyone should read:
https://f1metrics.wordpress.com/2014/08/28/the-rules-of-racing/

My defence lawyer quotes:
On a straight, a defending driver has the right to suddenly change direction, even using the entire track width if they are fully ahead of the attacking driver. The same right does not apply in or immediately before the braking zone for a corner. Sudden changes of direction just before or within the braking zone are considered extremely dangerous, as they can leave the attacking driver nowhere to go.

GB: I said

there is a car-width on the left of Rolz at braking point, so by the book GB had right to it.
I am not sure about how much overlap there was before he brakes (looks like he brakes a little earlier than you do), but in any case if you have left a car-width before braking point, you cannot regain the racing line in any way that can cause a collision. So I think we agree completely on this. The only thing I was pointing out is that in a crowded situation, just after you both have passed a struggling car, things are a bit more foggy and many stewards would have not not penalized him (with perhaps a call in the next briefing explaining that the move was not legal per se and would not be allowed, but it was considered a racing accident only because of the confused situation).

1054
My humble opinion.

For me it is really at the limit. On one hand, Rolz is clearly ahead at braking point (when GB hits 200 or so). On the other hand, he had not regained the racing line by then, and he should have not attempted to do it under braking. To be more precise: there is a car-width on the left of Rolz at braking point, so by the book GB had right to it. It was therefore at least an optimistic move. But given the situation of heavy traffic, it is hard for him to keep track of every single opponent in that moment, and probably GB is also slightly optimistic in trying to get the outside in such a messy situation.

All in all: guys, these type of accidents happen between the best drivers. Even in the diaper-like formula one today they might have called it a racing accident and give no penalties. These are not the crashes we should worry about. They will always happen any now and then.

1055
You did not download the skin of DA Racing!!!???!!! I am all with Rolz now: well done mate! :)

1056
I'll be back then and therefore I am definitely in!

If you are already taking the preferences, I guess mine would be BMW, McLaren, Audi.

Breaking with the tradition, I post my race report tonight as opposed to tomorrow morning---even before results are up.

PRE-RACE: I am heavy. Very heavy. And my weakest spot of all is tight, slow chicanes. Not many hopes.

RACE 1: after an anonymous quali, I start somewhere like 14th. Decent start, but then I get into the traffic jam at t1. I try to stay out of trouble by parking my car on the exit of the second turn waiting for the guys ahead of me to disentangle one from another. But Gratulin and Christopher behind me were a bit more in a rush, so I manage to get damage despite not moving. I have to say: more than anything else, this seems to be a bit of a problem with AC damage. How come I get touched lightly at 3km/h from behind and my rear wing is horribly damaged for the rest of the race? A puncture could be,... but the wing?

Anyway: I manage to restart and get into a decent 6th position (or 7th?). I reach GB ahead of me and I have a decent chance at passing him and the guy ahead of him, but he spins and I can't avoid him. Now I have both wings damaged. I spend the remaining 5 laps defending my position. I almost manage, but then on the last lap we touch and that's about it.

RACE 2: the start is basically identical to race 1. But this time I touch with Grubbet (I think: sorry if it is not you) while moving. The result is the same though: aero damage. I fight for position with him for 4 or 5 laps, including a three way braking for t1 with GB. But my damage is pretty big and I eventually have to concede the position. I go for repairs at the end of lap 7, but when I get out I am basically last...

SEASON: this was my last race of the season. In general, I was very pleased with my times. I made many mistakes (one of which costed the race to a few of you at Mugello---sorry!) but I had a good pace in most races. This was my first experience with open wheelers, so I am quite happy. On the other hand, between a 100kg+ car in most races and me still having to learn how to deal with traffic the right way, I basically got to results. All in all, I have learned a lot about driving and racing, which is what matters the most.

Thank you, Wally, for the great organization once again! See you in January.

1058
I will miss this very much. I won't be able to drive at all for almost two months. So please post great reports and especially videos!

1059
However, love driving these cars but very stressful in traffic.
With this I completely and wholeheartedly agree :)

Re ballast, the only analysis I need is these lap times from qual/race 2:

Mael1:33.45727
Freezer1:33.69833
Bacchulum1:33.89231
Schmittez1:33.9120
Grat1:34.181100
Rolz1:34.30291
Matthew1111:34.489145
Guybrush Threepwood1:34.501167
Phil.81:34.53489
Marty1:34.696125
EdWood1:34.78898
Simone1:34.85226
Jeremy1:34.869113
Skaife1:34.87672
Wally1:34.89736
Grubbet1:34.9914
StanDaam1:35.15570
Gratulin1:35.30632
Bafs171:35.65754

About 2 seconds separating a mixed field of 19 aliens and cowboys. 'Nuff said. And Guybrush isn't 'hard done by'... with 167kg, he was still faster than more than half the field!

Hi Wally: I was only offering a possibility in case you wanted to see some more detailed analyses. As I have said many times: I trust your judgement and experience with this stuff. :)

Continuing my somewhat grumpy tone - why the hell are cars riding the curbs on cold tires on lap 1 T3?
Because:

1. I passed on the same curb on pretty much the same way the previous 30 times I did an exit lap with tyres on similar temps;
2. most of us followed a similar line---although the others managed to control the situation better;
3. we were quite crowded through t2 and my line into t3 was definitely not optimal;
4. I was very focused on not hitting the guy ahead and not moving in any unexpected way for the guy behind and probably did not notice that my rear left was a tad more to the left than I would normally do.

You are free to watch the reply and see whether I was prudent, careful, and deliberately preferring to let people pass than fight for position through t1 to t3 yourself. I think I was, at least in the range of what is reasonable.

I fully admit it was my mistake and I take all the blame, but I find it a bit over-polemic to focus on a honest, simple driving mistake. Sometimes I crash with people ahead of me who got a bit loose or slowed down strangely in a corner. It is normal and it is my fault if I hit them. Sometimes people spin, sometimes people take a slightly more aggressive line. I am racing: this happens and it is all good. In this season I have been starting from the back quite a few times and had to slowly dodge more than a few spun cars in the first few turns. I guessed it is normal and there are yellow flags to tell me. In race 1 last night I got my front wing damaged in the silliest of contacts with Bacchulum (checking the replay from both in-car replays, it looks as both of us thought we were going just straight ahead, but something with the white lines at Mugello was probably misleading us and we ended up converging to the same point). I got hit a few times from behind without particular reasons. But hey: all these things happen when racing on cars that are quite hard to handle for most of us. Sometime we get a bit grumpy about it (I defintitely did :)) but it is part of the risk and the fun of driving close to each other. Yes: I am really sorry for the poor Jeremy who just happened to be there when I lost it. But other than that, I do not feel I have done something so terrible this time.

Come to think of it as we get ballasted, by early pace you could plan this early in the season and set the car up extra safe then you would get your assist from the ballast and be able to run an easy to drive safe car all season at a competitive pace. Plan A as I did tried as hard as I could early with a fast setup then get ballast and be forced to extract every tenth out of the car each lap all season on the edge. If you take plan B safe option and cruise around you would be low weight and have a stable car with power on demand almost like kers or push to pass when needed and then strategically back off a little each lap to make sure you stay within your laptime quota and have a bit of buffer. :)

This would work If you run race 1 and sacrifice this a bit seeing as worst round is dropped anyway, I didn't run the first round but got ballasted anyway so a double disadvantage as did GB. However its fair we got ballast early as we would have dominated round 2 on no ballast but likely still would have only the same weights we have now.

A little bit of gaming the system is acceptable: in the end, this is a sport. I can offer myself to do some bit of statistical analysis to get a better grasp of the numbers. Perhaps Wally has already done all that, and perhaps these numbers won't help us much, but at the bare minimum I am personally curious to see what is the actual impact of ballast on our performances.

Personally I am taking the ballast thing (also) as a badge of honor. I am still fairly new, and managing a 5th place in quali with 100kg makes me proud :)

1063
Wally: is it easy for you to extract the best lap times for each quali in the season in a file? If so, we could (i) regress lap times on ballast with session fixed effects and (ii) do the same but adding driver fixed effects (of course, quadratic regs would probably be best). The first results would tell us whether the current ballast calculations are making us all equal (null hypothesis) or are favouring those with lower ballast too much (significant positive coefficient). Fixed effects would take off any effect of session grip, track, and so on. The second one would give us a measure of the effect of ballast separated from the ability of each driver (driver fixed effect would do that). This way we could have a precise measure of how much ballast to give (perhaps with a quadratic formula, as said before) after each competition. I am thinking of using quali times as they are less affected by traffic and damage, but of course one could also use each single race lap, controlling for lap number, position, distance from car in front/behind and--- if data are available---damage.

An example for the file would be something like

Driver ID.     Session #.     Best lap.     Ballast
15                3                   91.584        43

(notice I have already converted the lap times in seconds)

As Marty was trying to understand whether there was a problem with the FR3.5, I thought it might be interesting to follow this thread on the AC forum: http://www.assettocorsa.net/forum/index.php?threads/missing-ground-collisions.28174/#post-580473.

Hi Wally, as I think I mentioned earlier on, I will be away from late November to mid-January. I will probably come back without remembering how to drive... assuming I knew it before.
