New public data is now available via Gaia and the 3D map is now @ 1.6 billion stars(approx 1%), I think they said 200 million asteroids and I believe in some cases exo plants and other rare objects. Now you can zoom into each and every single star found by Gaia.Find out more here: You can view it via windows desktop or in VR both Oculus and Vive are supported. desktop exe is on the link below. To setup VR just google Gaia VR and you should find instructions.https://zah.uni-heidelberg.de/institutes/ari/gaia/outreach/gaiasky/downloads/ « Last Edit: May 15, 2018, 09:30:43 AM by Phil » Logged Phil.8 RestrictedRacing Hero Member Posts: 4158 Karma: 62 Δ8 Re: Gaia Sky - Discover the Milky Way in a new way. « Reply #1 on: May 15, 2018, 04:22:43 PM » Very cool, I have a 12 inch dobsonian telescope, I like some star gazing from time to time Logged The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older Bacchulum RestrictedRacing Hero Member Posts: 3403 Karma: 96 Re: Gaia Sky - Discover the Milky Way in a new way. « Reply #2 on: May 15, 2018, 05:01:38 PM » Is that a true 1.6 billion stars, or an actual 1.6 thousand million? I hate it when scientists get that word wrong. Einstein said there is no universal definition of "billion". More or less. It's all relative to your country of reference Logged “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time” Bacchulum RestrictedRacing Hero Member Posts: 3403 Karma: 96 Re: Gaia Sky - Discover the Milky Way in a new way. « Reply #6 on: May 16, 2018, 07:19:54 PM » No, I disagree with Einstein! It's not my opinion, it's in the word itself:billion = bi-million = 1m^2trillion = tri-million = 1m^3quadrillion = I think you get it by now......That's the beauty of a constructed word, if you know the words it's made from, you don't need a dictionary to tell you it's meaning. The other thing pricks me regularly is the "milli meter" - i.e. one-thousands of a meter, huh? But million isn't a thousand, it's a thousand times thousand. In light of this, and reviewing the short scale, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_large_numbers) the only problem is with the thousand IMO. That just should not be there. The long scale - used in Hungary, too - is just fucked up with the milliard added in, (and the other stuff). « Last Edit: May 17, 2018, 09:35:26 AM by Bird » Logged Seanus RestrictedRacing Hero Member Posts: 1424 Karma: 74 ∞+1|ℵ₀ Seanus Re: Gaia Sky - Discover the Milky Way in a new way. « Reply #10 on: May 17, 2018, 10:41:44 AM » I say each power of 10 needs a unique name. After 'thousand' we seem to lose the plot. 10,000 (next topic, the decimal separator) already has a name, that is 'crore'.Just need to make up a few more but, NOT basing them on Latin or Greek or as derivations of some lower number. Cool, so how do you like my solution?Million=10^3 = 1,000 (like milli is 0.001)Billion=10^6 = 1,000,000Trillion=10^9 etc...just add three zeroes. Therefore decillion should have 10*3 zeroes. Easy-peasy.If we agree, we can start spreading this correct way about numbering! The main reason the short scale is popular is because accountants and politicians get to say a cool word like billion.Image how "cool" they'll be (in their own heads) when they can say quadrillion all the time? And as an added bonus, they could brag about how many people became millionaires under their 'economic governance'.
