Title: T500RS
Post by: Joe on September 07, 2016, 04:11:46 PM
So I sold all my camera gear, spent 800 of that money on Lego (hobby I picked up during my AC break), and have just about enough left that could afford a T500RS.

Anyone have one? Any good? Any other recommendations?

Currently running a G27. Probably won't bother with a shifter as I can't really use the clutch. That said I don't like the idea of not being able to use one should I decide to try, so I may pick one up in the future.

As gonna say check out Fanatec CLS Elite, but they are pretty pricey  :o

Yeah was looking earlier. Top notch stuff but a little too much for me at the moment.

I have a T500RS and am very happy with it. The best thing about it is probably the mass of it. It's a big unit that produces a lot of force. It doesn't feel like a toy. It feels a little "notchy" when you turn the wheel, i.e. not totally smooth like you'd expect a belt driven wheel to feel, but I guess the belt is notched for grip. It doesn't feel bad per se, just a little grainy.

The paddles are fixed on the base, but they are very big, so you soon get used to that. It's not a problem. The pedals are good. The unit does have a loud fan noise after you've been using it for a while, but it doesn't bother me.

I also have the TH8A shifter, which is metal construction and takes abuse. I would recommend that too.

Thanks Wally. Have you had a G27 in the past? Curious about comparisons and whether it's worth the money to upgrade or just stick with the G27.

Will do some more googling.

No, I went from a DFGT to the T500RS.

I've been looking into getting another wheel for a long, long time.

The T300RS is the later model.  I looked at getting a T500RS but the paddles not rotating with the wheel turned me off - even though they are big enough to still get to while the wheel is rotated it's still a deal breaker for me.

I looked at Fanatec but the maintenance and issues with them was a little off putting - but the price was just extreme.  Although from what I've heard they have a new range coming out which is more reasonably priced.

But what I settled on was the T300RS Ferrari GT Alcantara edition wheel and pedal set.  It seemed to have the best combination of wheel with lots of buttons + rotating paddle shifters + pedals with clutch and brake mod.  You'd still have to get the H shifter though.  From what I've read the upgrade in FFB from a G27 to a T300RS is very nice!

Cheers gb! I saw the 500rs is only 50 bucks more than the 300rs and the pedals look much better but will take another look.

Disclaimer: I still haven't made the jump to get a new wheel!

A lot of people say the T300 pedals are crap - and the normal 2 pedal ones are from all reports, but the T3PA pro pedals (which come with the pack) are much the same as G27 but with the adjustable brake mod.

Honestly, the fixed paddles is nothing. It has never inconvenienced me.

Could be the CSL Elite stuff? They currently have a package for $1050 for wheel and load cell pedals. Still a bit more than I'd wanna spend, but much cheaper than their other stuff.

Done quite a bit of reading, watching etc tonight. I'm pretty tempted to go with the basic T300RS as gamesmen have it on sale for $429, then keep using my G27 pedals which have the brake spring mod (would need to have both wheels plugged in unfortunately). Then in November the new Fanatec CSL Elite Pedals with load cell come out for $329.

I think Leo Bodnar has a USB adapter for G27 pedals so you won't need the wheel plugged in.

Thanks slideways. I saw ricmotech had one but was thinking if I'd get the fanatec pedals in november I'd skip getting the adapter. Will check out the one you mentioned.

Ah nice. The rimotech one connects it to a thrustmaster wheel but making it usb is better. Looks uk based and the inlaws are coming over at the end of the month. Tempting...

The challenge with these sort of upgrades is to not end up spending nearly as much as a new thingy!!

Post by: Joe on September 08, 2016, 02:52:58 PM
Yeah. I don't really need it, the G27 is fine, but I have money burning a hole in my pocket, and I'm curious what the 300RS would feel like to use.

Maybe I'll wait until November and get those new Fanatec pedals first, then maybe the wheel after that. That way I don't need to faff around with adapters either.

I've always been told that a pedal upgrade should always be the first thing to go for. Mine are absolutely knackered. Next year I'm going to start from scratch and replace everything.  ;D

Just my opinion, but I think a pedal upgrade is the first thing if you are going from a linear resistance brake pedal to a load-cell or progressive resistance pedal.

I've got the GTEye spring in my G27 brake pedal which feels perfect for me - it's progressive resistance and I couldn't imagine a load cell feeling that much better, at least not to the point of improving my lap times.  For this reason I'd rather upgrade the wheel first as the G27 sounds like it's quite weak and lacks detail compared to the Thrustmasters or Fanatec, and when a lot of pace comes from dialing out your setup so it's unstable but corners better you need more feel around the corners so you can maintain a small amount of "slip" or sliding to help the car rotate more.  That's why in my case I think better FFB would lead to better (consistent) lap times.

I also have the GTEye spring in my G27 pedals and it does feel pretty good. I'm still undecided; spent quite a bit of time today reading and watching videos. Not gonna rush out and buy something like I normally do!

Another happy GTEye user here! Interesting comments by Guybrush regarding the G27 wheel. It will be interesting to see if Thrustmaster deliver a cost effective direct drive wheel.

Now all we need is a game controlled clutch & h-shifter ffb system so that manual gear changes can be made to feel different in different cars. How come that hasn't been done yet?
Title: Re: T500RS
Post by: Joe on September 08, 2016, 07:09:38 PM
I also have the GTEye and love it. I've been reading more review today, and watching more videos. I think I'm gonna wait until the full reviews are out for the new Fanatec CSL Elite range. If I was gonna spend 700-800 anyway, maybe it's worth the few hundred extra. It does look pretty nice.

Ran GTEye in my G27 (which Ben now has) and made a huge difference.
Best cheap mod you could do...

Yep, I run the Nixim mod which is the same spring really. Don't have a prob with that. They feel great. My pots are totalled. I have to spray every couple of weeks and strip the pots down every couple of months for a total overhaul. My throttle is playing up again after 2 weeks.   >:( ;D

I've also been keeping an eye on this myself. Inside Sim Racing have done a good initial impression video on it and it seems amazing (minus the broken thread). Direct drive and load cell for around 1g?

With that being said Thrustmaster are releasing a direct drive wheel for Gran Turismo Sport in a few months.

Personally myself I'm thinking of doing a few cheap mods on my G27, like the spring upgrade and steering wheel adapter + new steering wheel. They say change is as good as a holiday, and a few cheap tweaks on my G27 might extend it's lifespan a bit 8)

Yeah pretty much decided if the reviews are good its happening. If I dont upgrade now while I have the cash from camera sale I never will.

I'd be surprised if the CSL set is available in Aus this year, but you never know.

If you could I'd give it some time to see what issues need to be ironed out.

Is that for Aus?  That'd be good if so.  Seeing as it wasn't due out in Europe until November I thought it might be a good couple of months before it made it to our shores.

Yeah thats on the aus site. End of oct for the base and 4th nov for the pedals. I'm in no rush but at the same time I'm likely yo spend the money on something else in the meantime.  :o

Well after a comment from Phil to say I should look at triple monitors before a wheel upgrade, but me saying I dont have a desk or the space, I found myself marking out a 1.5m by 1m area in the living room with masking tape for my wife to review. Watch this space! 8)

It came with parts to make it single or multi. Apparently will hold a 55" single screen, or 3 screens up to 30". I just bought three 24" screen off Gumtree for $200 so will see how I go lining them up tonight, hopefully before the fun run!

My triple screen app settings are:

Rotation 34 Distance 1000
Width 600 Margin 22

You can set the distance to whatever you want, really, then just adjust the width to get the FOV that looks good. The Distance and Width just set a ratio; the values are irrelevant.

Here's how I currently have mine. Pretty similar. I set the triple monitor app values to be real, then moved driver position so my G27 overlaps the wheel in game, so I have a bit more dash than you and phil did.

The FOV is still a little different to when I ran single screen. Some corners seem shorter. I'll keep it how it is though and get used to it. I assume as I've put the correct values (side monitor angle a guess), into the app it should be right.

Had to turn my GFX down a touch with the larger res, not much though, just the PP settings down to high from max. The built in GFX benchmark averaged 59 fps so will keep it at that for now.
