Title: Why lap times got slower
Post by: Wally on July 21, 2014, 08:30:47 AM
@Phil

http://www.assettocorsa.net/forum/index.php?threads/update-0-21.12363/page-26#post-205001

In the new server cfg, there is a new grip level randomness setting which was still on the default 15%. Explains why the next race was 3 seconds off the pace of the previous one. Very confusing when trying different setups! I'll make sure the randomness is set to 0.

Very interesting, good find.

I just found this thread a Dev replied and explained the randomness

http://www.assettocorsa.net/forum/index.php?threads/dynamic-track-option.12468/

What is Kunos trying to attempt here? One could assume they don't want us to race on the same track conditions each race.

Do we want static track conditions or does this add to the realism? Would this require different car setups each time?

Off-topic: What is the Karma score on this forum?

I'd vouch for randomness :)

Karma is your niceness/evilness rating.  you can applaud/smite ppl for posts, and that's how it builds.  Mine is -666 the prefect evil score, and you shall not touch it!

That explains it on the server the other day, when pace dropped off for no real reason.

Oops. Never tell anyone not to touch something it makes it rather tempting  :)

I can set it back but it will affect your karma, too!

Until (if) we get a proper racing line, I'd rather leave the grip non random.  It makes setup changes too hard to assess.

Yup, you would be constantly adjusting tire pressures. I do like his thinking though and would like to see how much it does effect the grip levels, at least knowing that could have elevated past frustration of not knowing why some days PB's were easy and other days at least a second off.

This was only since the last update, to be clear.

Oh so my frustrations remain... :-[

Actually, they might have only exposed the server settings in the last update. Maybe there always was a bit of randomness. Makes hotels records a bit difficult though... It couldn't have been random.

But if it's true, you need to up it to 1000%, keep restarting the server until you hit the jackpot, then dominate the RSR list :D

Ah, I thought on Saturday arvo when a few of us had some races there was less grip during the race.  So I wasn't going mad...

Quite possible, as most did struggle to get near their PB's on the server and sometimes people were doing better times so who knows  ;D

So does non-random still have live track progression?
I've been waiting so long for live track in a decent sim it would be a shame not to use it.
Like getting weather and always running in the dry. ???

And: what does racing line has to do with random conditions?  (sorry but I really don't get it - for me it's two separate things)

I don't believe you'll "need" to adjust setups, but you certainly need to adjust your driving...and that's a welcome thing in my books. :)

The randomness is a random starting grip, then the entire track slowly grips up over time. I read on the official forums that this has been taken out in the latest update, but have to see.
