I will update this first post when I know what I am doing with the AWS server
-
Thanks very much Dennis, Are you sure you didn't pay to much :)
-
How much is the server cost?
On that front;
I could offer some free amazon hosting, at least for the coming year, I think.
Our company has more credits we use in a year at the moment, just need to work out the server rights somehow.
Last time I've tried I've failed miserably.
-
Thanks Bird. I have a free amazon server as well, I just got this first month on a 50% discount to test it out over amazon. I personally think its a bit smoother and its defiantly easier to update and stuff.
For 20 slot it will cost around $208 a year, which for the ease of use I am happy to pay, Someone has contributed nearly half of that already, which I am happy to refund some if he feels he overpayed :) and I have matched that amount also , so Its basically payed for 12 months now :)
-
Thanks very much Dennis, Are you sure you didn't pay to much :)
It is my way of saying thankyou to the people who run the servers, without whom
we have no races. I do not have the skills and really appreciate the time and effort
put in by the server admin.
-
Thanks very much :D
-
I know Dennis' generosity, nice work.
And thanks Phil Dennis is spot on.
-
Thank you Mr Rook, :)
-
Thanks a lot. Better not get any more donation for a while. Give them to wallys server. With what the 3 of us have thrown in its over 12 months of server now :)
-
well, Long live Thursday's racing! Yep good idea, I hope to run on the Tuesdays next year.
-
The last few donations (Thanks Very Much) run out soon so I thought I would do a small reminder post
Same as original post, I am not asking and don't except any payments, money is no issue, I am happy to pay it myself, Its just here if anyone feels the need :)
https://streamline-servers.com/billing/index.php?m=public_pay&hash_id=P5Wj7pKERk7E
-
Is this okay now Phil?
-
Just noticed , thanks very much :) I will match that today and that will keep us going for another 6 months :)
-
Thanks Dennis, most generous of you.
Please Don,t feel obligated to pay that much every time :)
-
I think I better name next season in recognition of a few people :) The Bruce Dennis Cup Trophy sounds good :)
-
Thanks very much Simon, Very generous of you also :)
The Bruce Dennis Simon Cup Trophy ? hehe
-
Thanks very much Grant Waterman :)

I have learnt something today with amazon free tier, Its only free up to a certain amount of data and I got a bill this month, That does not worry me its only money and cheap :), I was just surprised that the server could of used nearly 10Gb of data, does this seem like a lot to others ?
$0.140 per GB - first 10 TB / month data transfer out beyond the global free tier
used - 9.989 GB

it is the first 750 hours on a new account that is free, from that point on it is pay. AWS info. (https://aws.amazon.com/free/#legal)
not sure about the data load on the server, seems high, will need to look a that one, Wally or Bird may chirp in here... :)
-
so it changes to pay as you go or something, if thats the case i probably better upgrade it to another type with a monthly bill instead :)
-
The data could well be MR info going back and forth, refreshing the MR cache and so on. I don't think the AC servers themselves see that much action from the public, do they?
-
yes i was wondering if it was MR, i have turned it off for now
-
Certainly happy to chip in for the account even if you see it as "small". Better to keep the "system" you have functioning, just give a hoy and there is a link me thinks for server payments... somewhere :-\
-
I can't comment on the data usage of AC, but indeed, the free tier has its limits every way. Traffic is one of the cheapest things on Ec2, luckily.
Btw you can get another free tier account with another credit card if the first one has expired. :)
-
I have had no more bills since I disabled Mino rating thingy
-
I have had no more bills since I disabled Mino rating thingy
Must be getting close to end of free instance, should we think about doing a multi year deal with the same company as we have had no problems, PM me the details so I can chip in.
-
I think there is a few months left :) will let you know when time is closer

OK thanks .

Free AWS server runs out this Saturday, and I have used up all my current emails.
This means its going to start costing, I have no idea how much yet as I cannot figure out how, so if anyone can figure out how much an EC2 Micro server will cost a month that would be very helpful :)

Wally should have a fair idea or if we went with the same provider as him , he would know exactly.

A t2.micro server's rough costs all up are around $15 iirc. And then each tier is double as you go up. Bit less, as usually the biggest cost is the cpu power, then the storage (the drive attached) is a magnitude less, then traffic & S3 storage is yet another magnitude less (i.e. negligible)
Here's a calculator: http://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html - don't forget to change the region to "asia-pacific (sydney)"!
Note that at this micro level, the storage (drive) is still a significant cost. Also note that storage *speed* is dependent on storage *size* funnily enough.
Although in the t2 range everything is burstable - including i/o - these bursts can only be fairly short at micro level (a minute or two I reckon).
You can also buy reserved instances. That means you pay someting up front and pay less (or nothing) ongoing. Depending on utilisation this can be much cheaper - 20%-50%. To get the cheapest you need to buy an all-upfront 3-year instance.
But even a 1-year all up front saves a bit: instead of $10.69/mo it's $80 one-off (USD) for the cpu power.
But you change the instance type to t2.small, and you start losing money, so this is only a good option if you're sure this is what you'll need for all year.
-
Thanks Bird, what we have been using for the last year has been perfect. If we can get the same for a 3 year deal that would be good . PM me your bank details so I can send you some money please Phil, once you can decide which way to jump.
-
Thanks, that's pretty cheap, will I just go monthly or get a 1 year one, 3 years seems a long time
-
Thanks, that's pretty cheap, will I just go monthly or get a 1 year one, 3 years seems a long time
You think it might not be good enough for ACC? ;) :P
-
I wont be playing ACC :)
-

1 year should be enough if you think the prices are good, a lot can happen in a year. I do not think I will be playing ACC either, content does nothing for me.
-
I cannot figure out how to pay for the server I have for 12 months :( so I will just leave it monthly I guess

Thanks, I just want to leave as is because it all works fine and has stracker all setup and everything and is already a micro server, just cannot figure out how to pay for it lol ;D
But maybe I cannot do that until it runs out at midnight ? if at all
-

You can purchase a "reserved instance" in the ec2 console (4th item on the left in the "instances" section) - then it'll automatically apply to any matching server. This way if you need/want to start a new one and shut the old one down, it still applies.
You just need to make sure you buy the correct instance in the correct zone, that's all.
-
Thanks Bird :) what is difference between convertible and standard ?
-
This , partial payment even though it says all upfront :-\
-
or this is my options, does that all look correct for full or partial payment ?
-
Thanks Bird :) what is difference between convertible and standard ?
Convertible is as it says; you can change the reserved instance to something - stronger or equal - later. But you're saving less. It's the "I'm unsure exactly what but I'll certainly need something" option :)
"...With Convertible RIs, customers now have the option at any time to change the instance family, OS, or tenancy associated with their RI. Via the EC2 Console or APIs, customers simply indicate what change they want to make, and the change is made as long as the exchange is for an equal or greater spend on the new Convertible RIs. "
and :
https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/ri-convertible-exchange.html
That second screen looks like it - the hourly is zero on them.
-
Thanks for all the help Bird :D
-
No worries.
-
Thanks for all the help Bird :D
Yes thanks Bird, much appreciated :).
-
Thankyou Rooshooter, thanks to your generosity we are paid for 12 months now
-
Fantastic work rooshooter and Phil.

The server has started asking for a password every time I or Wally access it and also has started saying "The server name on the certificate is incorrect" and "The certificate is not from a trusted certifying authority", I am pretty dumb with all this stuff and was wondering if anyone (Bird) knows how to fix it

That would be the SSL certificate. Did you purchase one from a trusted authority previously?

With the certificate thing, it's OK to tick "Don't ask me again for this computer" (or whatever it says). That's more a problem at the Amazon end than anything we can fix.
-
Access it how, Phil? Browser (I guess)?
In that case all you need is a new SSL certificate. It could be the code that serves the html pages installed its own self-signed certificate and it's now expired.
It can be regenerated, but you need to know a few details. There's also a possibility that upgrading the code, or calling a reconfiguration in it will regenerate the certificate.
eg here's a page about "how to generate self-signed certificates".
https://www.sslshopper.com/article-how-to-create-a-self-signed-certificate.html
It's nothing but a couple of files that resides somewhere in the file system, that the web server reads and uses for encryption.
You can call a command on linux to generate such a certificate.
Alternatively, you can get free signed certificates, eg https://letsencrypt.org/
It may look a bit easier, but you still need to find the originals to replace them, and of course give the certificate authority the same details to generate the cert - eg hostname.
In fact a lot of these require you to generate a key file called "CSR" (certificate sign request) via apache, upload it, and they'll give you the certificate files.
How to find the certificate?
In apache, you just look into the ssl.conf file, which usually resides somewhere like /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf, it's a few pages long, but will have a line like this:
SSLCertificateFile /var/www/ssl/[filename].crt
You need to replace a few files, mind, not just that one. That's simply the public certificate file.
There's also the private key
SSLCertificateKeyFile /var/www/ssl/[filename].key
And the certificate authority file:
SSLCACertificateFile /var/www/ssl/[filename].ca-bundle
They may not have the same extensions, and will probably reside elsewhere, not in /var/www/ nevermind that.
After replacing them, restart apache.
Do take backups of both config & certificate files, in case something gets fucked up!
-
Like Wally said this is more an internal Amazon thing when authenticating for RDP. I wouldn't sorry about it. You don't need your own SSL cert on the server.
-
Thanks all :)
what about the password not saving anymore ?
-
Thanks all :)
what about the password not saving anymore ?
Depends on how you access the server I suppose. Are you using RDP? Teamviewer? What is not working here?
I'm guessing the password is actually working though and you just need to enter it each time?
-
Yes remote desktop connection and yep it works , just have to re enter it each time
Wally may explain it better, I am a dummy with this stuff
-
Same for me now. >:(
Has an update just toggled on the lock screen? (I'll try it myself later)
-
Sounds like it could be issue with your PC, not the server. Maybe you should try this on your PC. (The PC connecting to the server)
Maybe start by checking this. This is just a copy from the URL listed just below. You can just scroll down a little bit on that page, I think it's the fourth picture on that page and this writing pasted below is just above that 4th pic. Check the policies on your PC to make sure it's allowing for saved credentials.
Local Computer Policy ➞ Computer Configuration ➞ Administrative Templates ➞ Windows Components ➞ Remote Desktop Services ➞ Remote Desktop Connection Client
Prompt for credentials on the client computer
Do not allow passwords to be saved
https://superuser.com/questions/604483/windows-7-remote-desktop-connection-save-credentials-not-working
-
It's happening to all of us, so I reckon it's a server issue.
I have started using this Microsoft tool to connect to the server:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=44989
This doesn't prompt me twice for the password and is generally very useful especially if you log on to more than one remote server.

Yeah that's also another option, is to install the more manageable version of Microsoft's remote tool.
The standard tool should still be ok to use. Just check your policies. I know it's happening with more people, but I still see it as the more likely issue.
I've seen RDP save credentials one day then not the next, work on one PC and not the next even though both were imaged together. I've never really cared about it much but it's just a problem I've seen pop up time and time again.
I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft pushes changes in with some of their updates. Remember v1803 has been released deployed for Win10 as well, maybe policies were updated with that update?
-
RDP is remembering the credentials OK, because you can connect to the box OK. It's the server itself that is then asking for the Administrator password again. It's Windows Server 2016. Maybe there was a Windows Server update rolled out. I checked the group policy on the server, and that has disabled the need to enter a password when you remote in.
But then again, when I log in with the other tool, it doesn't ask for an additional password, so maybe Win 10 updated the RDP client and broke it.

I cant even find those settings :) I am beyond help lol :D

so maybe Win 10 updated the RDP client and broke it.

8)

Nope. I'm still using 7.
Remote Desktop Connection Manager can't open .rdp files so I haven't used that yet.

I know where you are coming from Phil, I broke into a cold sweat just reading the response from Bird, let alone trying to implement it :o :o

If it's RDP then don't try to implement it. It's only describing what to do with web (or rather apache) based access.

Rooshooter has donated the funds to keep the server running another 12 months, thanks very much :)
Does anyone know/remember how I make a payment to continue the server for another 12 months,
is it under reserved instances - purchase more like these, I just want to keep the server I have so I don't have to change anything, just pay for it for another 12 months, any advice is greatly appreciated,
cheers

Reserved instances work very simply; you purchase them, and they apply to any running instance. Just make sure details match; i.e. server type ( eg t2.small ) and region (asia-pacific/sydney) - and of course you'll want to buy either the 12 or 36 mo full upfront. (best savings is the 36mo non-changeable)
If you guys are short on the 36mo full upfront, tell me how much is missing and where to put the money, I can front it, no probs.
-
Thanks Bird, I don't expect you to pay, I would of paid any difference if I realised, it increases the price from 150 odd to 286, which is an awesome saving but I have already paid for the 12months :-\
-
Thanks for the very generous offer Bird.
-
In about 12 months the server will need renewing. I currently pay between $5 and $8 a month on top of the upfront costs and probably will not continue doing that after it runs out.
If anyone wants to start their own server and copy all the stuff we have on the server over go for it. There is heaps of time, just a heads up.
I am just not playing enough anymore to keep paying for something I dont use, but will keep paying the monthly costs for now
My life has just go to busy to play as I would like to unfortunately
Cheeers all :D

My life has just go to busy to play as I would like to unfortunately
Time to find a new team mate :'(
-
I was hoping this day would never come :'(. A huge thankyou for stepping in when Flattop went to his big simrig in the sky: and keeping Flattop Thursdays going :). It was a lot of fun racing with you Phil and I have many fond memories of your alien driving skills :o 8).
regards,
Denis.

You think anyone will have Phill's patience to put up with you Joe? Better we hope Phil gets bored as winter starts returning and have time available to join us :)

I am defiantly going to try and do Tuesdays on a more regular basis , But yeah I dont blame you Joe for wanting a new teammate and understand and dont mind if you get one 8) 8) 8) ;D ;D ;D
last few months have been crazy and working until 10pm 4 or 5 nights a week I am just stuffed on the other nights
-

I loved keeping Flattop Thursday going, I just cant do it justice these days and from what I see when I check the forums is Seanus has it all sorted far better than I ever did and I really appreciate knowing someone else can keep the legacy going.
-
howdy all,
The time has come to deal with the server unfortunately. The credit card I have on the server will expire in a few days so the small monthly payments will stop and the server itself will expire in march
I hate to let you all down and I really miss racing, I just cant commit time to it working 4 and 5 nights a week, i am just to tired when I get home.
Anyway let me know what you want to do,
I have sent seanus a message and can meet up on discord this evening if he or anyone wants me to change it to their details.
I miss racing so much but havnt even turned AC on in over 6 months maybe longer so I am back at noobs level 100 :D
I am trying to change my work days a bit and am planning to try and get on for at least some practice in the near future
let me know what you want to do, I miss you all :)
-
so I am back at noobs level 100 :D
That's fine you'll still have mael to race with
-
LOL Joe, savage.
It would be good to have you back Phil.
-
Thanks :D
Thanks you Seanus for looking after the server :)
-
Thanks Phil and Seanus :) :) :) :) :) :)
-
Thanks to Phil and Seanus. Shout out if you need a donation to help keep the running costs down.
-
Yeah, good job Seanus.
-
Thanks Phil and Seanus.
I know how you feel Phil, been ages since I seriously booted up AC. In the process of putting together a "new" computer out of whatever parts I can get, but seem to be running into compatibility problems, hopefully sorted soon.
