Title: Thursday Night Fun Racing
Post by: Gratulin on June 18, 2014, 08:44:48 AM
Would anyone be interesting in continuing the Thursday night sessions as a casual race night? I would definitely benefit from more online racing sessions in addition to hotlapping and AI racing. We could use the same car/ track combo as the current Tuesday night round to give some practice for the following Tuesday. Alternatively, a new combination of car/track could be tried out and perhaps even testing one of the new custom tracks like Aosta.

I would be happy to assist with setup work if there is enough interest.

I'd be keen for more online racing and I can make Thursday! Personally I'd like to race the GT cars like BMW GT2 vs Z4 GT3, maybe it's only because I've spent more time in these cars but I think they are a little more forgiving, the brakes are better as well as the handling.

Either way sign me up please  8)

EDIT: New signature - anyone know how to resize the image a notch, [img=100x50] doesn't seem to work.

Even though I am totally useless, I really enjoy racing with RL people. Just adds a dynamic AI doesn't give, as well as I learn stuff.. slowly.
Also helps training for dealing with race nerves and choking under pressure.

I'm keen to sign up but if there is a full grid I'll sit out and let someone else have a go.

Id be up for it in any combo, I do have tennis Thursdays normally but in between seasons atm and so will join in whenever I can if theres a few to race. Also we dont play when it rains and being in Melbourne thats every second Thursday so I should be around a bit.  :)

To edit, drove Aosta in AC the other day and already in love with the layout, great flow and fairly tricky technical curves. I didnt drive NKP so much even though I bought it day one of beta or whatever it was back then. Would be great in any car racing MP, I will have another go at making the AI file for it this afternoon just no idea how to make the artificial idiots drive the first hairpin properly.

It would be good for the reserves to get some time on track with some of us as well.   I can't guarantee it will try to assist with numbers.

Would be best if there would be a bookijg free server or maybe even use the kegety mod to allow users to join any session without needing to be pre booked. Then just have a password and anyone can join til its full, I do hope Kunos adds this to the official game as it works well but atm both server and client need to download a mod to make it work.

I'll look into this. I think that's the best option.
How does a 15 min qual, 10 min race cycle sound?
Does the mod work? I thought I read it had broken in latest builds.

Any ideas on car/track combo?

How does Lotus 2 Eleven @Vallelunga sound? - used recently for test trackday, different car from current season, good "trainer" car (?), Vallelunga not used in current season and seems to suit the Eleven. This is just a suggestion however. Others seem to be able to pick good car/track combos. GT cars are good but seem to suit tracks like Silverstone or Imola that we have just done.

Marty and I were saying last night that the Abarth 500 @ Old Monza would be exciting :p

If you could have a random selection on the night that would be good, so everyone goes in fresh.

What do you want to train for, though?  Simple, honest cars are best for learning.  I wish we had a FF or something akin to the f1600 from nkp...those are the real learner's cars.

As for the setup; why don't you just add everyone;  they can join during the qual can't they?  And well, if you can't join during a race, that's just that.

Title: Re: Thursday Night Fun Racing

I was thinking that the Eleven was the closest to the f1600 in AC at present. Is this the case?

Prebooked is fine but then your still limited to those drivers and if new guys or reserves want to race then they cant, having an open session will allow larger fields to fill in for those pre booked but not starting. I will give the mod a try again and see if its working again.

I just tested the Kegety mod and have no issues joining the few open freejoin servers with it, user side its quite simple you just need to download the mod and install. It works as a prebooked server but only the cars are pre booked any person with the mod can join the server at any time and jump into any car not being used. Server side I think some lines need to be changed to adjust for the current server with the original mod but there are a few servers up atm but most are also passworded.

http://www.kegetys.fi/booking-free-multiplayer-for-assetto-corsa-early-access/

It does eliminate the booking process so thats the main advantage otherwise it works the same as a prebooked server with the same limitations so you cant change cars and so the basic open server with lots of available cars on a track rotation is also not a bad idea but then the silly booking system gets in the way. So you really need to limit shorter sessions or have very long booking times.

Still this has the advantage of allowing new guys with a password to join in and for a main race or 2 you could have longer sessions similar to the league nights if people wanted that but probably just do qualy and race maybe 15 min each so would give 4 races an hour.

The simplest option for users is to have a prebooked server but then you need an admin available to make changes where a freejoin server can be pretty much left alone and work as a prebooked one.

I think you can put everyone - including reserves - on the list, and whoever joins, joins (up to the limit)

Guys, can we try it on the Practise server please? You can add me to the end of the entry list since I no longer have access. There are often only  1 or 2 drivers on the server but, as a reserve, I cannot get on. Thanks.
Title: Re: Thursday Night Fun Racing
Post by: marty on June 18, 2014, 08:09:09 PM
I guess it just needs to be tested, I think it may not work as each car entered must have a grid location. Worst case grid 25 and on ends up off map and kills the server performance best case it works  ;). I know you can have more people then grid spots for a regular open booking server but in early build if there were more drivers then spots the server would crash. The difference there is that the server only loads as many cars as it needs to after the booking period where pre booked all will need to have cars loaded and parked even if not all drivers turn up.

Well, here's hoping Kunos allow free-join some time soon.  Can't believe they thought only having a few minute window to get into a server was a good idea... who knows come Saturday all our worries might be gone :)

The FreeJoin mod is still a bit clunky. I have to still assign cars to slots in an entry list, just no names & guids.
What I've tried is to add all 29 GUIDS to the entry list of our AUS-www.xgn.com.au-TUE-NIGHTS server, set up on a 15 min qual/7 lap race cycle at Monza (with the BMW M3 E30 cars for now).
Can someone try to join this server and see if it shts itself with 29 cars in there and let me know how it goes.

Just tried server didnt chit itself but likely would once one of the last 3 cars joined, as there are 26 grid and pit spots at Monza and so here is where the last 3 spawned. They are all actually inside the one car a few meters above the ground waiting to most likely fall through the map once they enter the car.

Seeing there are 26 spots I dont see any reason we cant have a couple reserves in this week if there are 26 guys that want to race but as I expected pre-booking more people then spots doesnt work.

Well the FreeJoin stuff probably works, but to make life easier, I would just set all cars in the entry list to a single make. I'll give it a try.

I've set the AUS-www.xgn.com.au-TUE-NIGHTS server up as a FreeJoin server, with 24 slots - i.e. the first 24 drivers can join in. The server has the usual password (PM me if you don't know it). To use this, you have to download a mod from HERE (http://www.kegetys.fi/freejoin/). There are instructions for the client.

Then extract files from this archive to your AC directory (Steam\SteamApps\common\assettocorsa).

Thanks Wally just tried and the server with freejoin works fine, also noticed another advantage there is no 25 second wait or at least there wasnt this time. You just enter the password, pick a car and press join then your in. Having freejoin hasnt caused me any issues joining other servers so its well worth installing for the guys on the fence as it lets you join any time and bypass the worst feature in AC MP

Alright, that looks all good. I'm not going to stuff around with skins. You tell me what car/track combo you want, and I'll put it up. I'm not going to be around tomorrow night - I'll just leave the server up looping like this.

Seeing it was Gratulin's suggestion I guess first week we can go with his choice, maybe add the KTM same as the race a while back. Then people can choose another combination later on.

Maybe 20 min qualy and 10 or 12 lap race with half 2 elevens and half KTM's then people just choose which they want.

Also if you can enable voting just in case the server is frozen we should be able to vote to restart it.

Thanks Wally

Shame Guybrush always fun racing with you, Wally I just noticed a bit of an issue with the server though I know your not available.

Being at Vallelunga there are only 22 grid slots but server is accepting 24 so 2 cars will be in the wrong spots.

I just checked and the last 2 cars on the list will fall through the map and the one before them is also in the wrong spot, so if anyone joins just avoid those cars and it may be ok still.

Here is what happens when you enter the last 2 cars in the list that dont have spots here.

I did try a lap and FPS dropped a bit going by the pits but on track performance still seemed ok, as long as nobody takes the last 3 KTM cars on the list I think it should be ok. Strange how the 22nd car is also not in its proper grid position but I dont think the cars drop unless someone actually loads into one of them.

Hah, sorry about that Marty. I was showing a friend of mine AC and left him to practice. Came back and he was on the grid with you... he almost got you on the way to the first corner but missed a gear!  I put him on with traction control, racing line, ABS etc but didn't make any difference against you lol.

All good, I guess aids cant beat my hacks  :) From what I have seen there arent many aids that would make anyone much faster then is possible without.

What would people want the practice race server setup as? a league race practice or something completely different like this seeing as there weren't many up for it.

This didn't really happen last Thursday. However, it may be worthwhile still setting up a FreeJoin server after tonight's racing. This can give the opportunity to test different track/car combinations in an online environment. How about trialling Aosta? Those who raced it on NetKar may have a better idea of a good car to use?
Title: Re: Thursday Night Fun Racing
Post by: marty on June 24, 2014, 05:15:32 PM
Yes would be nice but I will be away, may try get on Wed nite if something is setup and Aosta in any car is great fun. Fun from the t125 s1 to the slower street cars and quite technically challenging for such a short track. Just need to be aware of the grid limits I think most of the NKP conversions have only 16 slots, I did ask the guy for at least 24 as Aosta would be great for a league race.

Post by: marty on June 25, 2014, 06:12:14 PM
Hi Wally the freejoin server is still not responding, I think it may be due to grid spots with 16 available at Aosta so 24 likely crashes the server.

You've seen my racing style Gratulin! If I had nothing to crash into I'd never make it round a track..

So, AOSTA is twisty and long? Is it modeled on a real location? Can't say I recognize the name.

There were about 6 of us there.

We had one race in the Lotus 240R. Every new car takes a bit of getting used to, but it was fun, sliding about quite nicely. I learned that I am way slower than Bird in the hairpin - a fact which he kept reminding me of by ramming into the rear of my car there (accidentally!).

Then we tried a 10 lap race in the F40 stage 3. I think all of use were sweating by the end of that race.

Awww, I love the F40.  I could imagine it being a real handful around Aosta though with all the trail braking and off-balance corners.

I'm also with you on that hairpin Wally, a major PITA for me in the few laps I did with Marty Tuesday night.

I kept trying to get a run on the inside out of the hairpin, and kept mis-calculating Wally's speed...  He spun every time, very nicely :)

Didn't have much time last night and tired/nto feeling 100% after a cold.
I remembered the shorter version, I raced that a few times in Netkar, a great track that I loved the 1600.
Rushed most attempts, with some limited tweaking, but Istvan, your changes certainly made the car more drivable.
I like the 'realism' that each car is different, I liked using the beta Elise, it was very close to my wife's Elise.  Need to apply the same patience here me thinks.

Phil found I brake early, hehehe and Rob? and I had a head-on bingle when I lost entering the last corner, sent me spinning for 10 secs and a mile off track!
Also noted the tyres take on a lot of debris!
