Title: Jan 19 - Season 10 Warmup Round: GT3 cars at Vallelunga
Post by: Wally on January 12, 2016, 11:08:25 PM
This is the last round before Season 10 starts in earnest. You can choose whatever GT3 car you want to try or practice in at Vallelunga (OSRW extra pits version).

TRACK DOWNLOAD (http://www.mediafire.com/download/q74me3zw4r6bq4f/Vallelunga_OSRW_31pits.rar) - this is an additional track layout for Vallelunga that adds extra pit boxes (up to 31) without altering the official KS track.

There will be 3 sprints of about 20 minutes each (12 laps), so people can try a few different cars.

Update: This round will be 2x tyre wear (fuel 1x), as most of season 10 will be to simulate wear over 1 hour of real-life racing.

After this round, you'll have up to the end of Saturday (23rd) to choose a car for the season. Anyone who doesn't nominate a car will have one chosen by me, to spread the mix of cars.

I think I posted this before, but I will definitely miss round one at Silverstone and maybe round two. My plane lands about three hours before the start of the race at Imola, so if everything runs smoothly I will be there.

Thanks for letting me know if you're away, but with no reserves list, it's not really necessary.

I updated some round details in the first post.

Hi Wally, I have not entered the GT3 Comp as I am not sure how my PC will go with the large entry list and varied car selection. This will give me a chance to try it out.

If all goes well and there is space for one more I "might" be a starter for the official season ;)

It would be good if we can get a big turnout for this race, to stress test everything.

I've been playing with my video card settings and would also like to see how low the FPS drops with a full grid...

Sure I can do it with AI, but real racers is preferable :)

If you haven't tried it already Rolz, try turning Reflection Quality down to None. I gained about 20fps just by doing that.  Easily the thing that made the biggest difference for me :)

Yeah found a few articles about it and ran the benchmarking tool they now have included...

What I had before I started to play with the setting was better than what I ended up with... still my CPU usage was lower... I must admit the current setting looks really good, but the proof will be when we have almost 30ppl at the start... that's when everyone's FPS drops it's guts... so to speak... :P

If you test with AI your performance will be better in mp with same grid as there is no need to calculate the artificial idiots lines and collisions.

Marty- before ur Titan died did u ever run the benchmark?

With 2 cards i was running 8000x1440 pretty much maxed at capped 62fps. On a single card need to drop res down to 1080 on triples and have turned reflection settings down a fair bit. Also needed to to turn shadows down 1 level but with this still run capped at 62fps with no frame drops. SLI still had more input lag and stutter with bigger issues with onscreen apps in AC. It did run great most of the time though and scaled well in sli nearly doubling fps at 4k or my 1440 triple screen res vs a single card.

Now getting the random crashes but pretty sure this is all win 10 as my other pc was randomly crashing since going to win 10 and this gets no gaming being a htpc in the living room now.

Switched that back to 8.1 and it has never crashed since. When I get home I will upgrade to win 8.1 again as it seems the new gfx code in win 10 fails quite badly with older nvidia gpu's. Titans are 700 series, my other pc has a 480gtx and was randomly crashing the same way when watching full screen videos on yt or pretty much any other full screen apps.

Maybe win 10 may work better with 980/970 cards and the next gen but its a big turd for any older cards and I cant say much good about that OS.

The only good thing about Win10 for me was that it reduced my boot time from about 50 seconds to around 20 seconds.  I haven't decided whether I like it or not though.  I haven't had any major issues with it, but I don't like how it does things on its own without you stopping it - eg. downloading updates.

I originally thought it was responsible for my graphics glitches in AC, but I think that was AC itself as there are no issues now since one of the AC updates.

Hmm I'm starting to think it's just NVidia and Win10... I got my mate (Trackmeister) into AC and helped him buy a PC... he's getting random BSOD's when entering and exiting AC... (EVGA GTX980 FTW)

I've now got the PC over my place to troubleshoot it and I'm pretty sure I've read all the forum discussions on "Windows 10 BSOD NVidia" :P
The only think I'm leaning towards is a RAM issue - PC was never 8.1, fresh Win10 build - or somehow this new graphics card vram allocation Win10 is doing can potentially be causing the problem... (this one though is not proven and fierce debate is still on going)

I've been letting it run all day on memtest - will see results tonight.

If ram ok I'll save his data, nuke and go to Win8.1 as well - I want him racing AC in Season 10!!! :P

Win10 is having a lot of teething problems as of yet, I reckon.
My mate have made the switch on his work computer and having all sorts of issues.  Mostly with Microsoft software (but I guess they're not unique)  The latest was; he could not save a world doc file. It was 30MB or so, not small but not overmuch.  His old win7 laptop which takes minutes to get to life opens and saves the file in seconds.    But this is just the last funny in a whole string of them.

Yeah, stay away from win10 for the time being, if you can.

Just extract the 'content' folder in the zip file into steamapps\common\assettocorsa, and say yes to merge/replace any files.

You should end up with this folder: steamapps\common\assettocorsa\content\tracks\vallelunga\vallelunga_osrw

I am running this on Win 10 and an MSI gt80 laptop. I have to squint when using the screen but it's still enjoyable.

The only issue I have is when I turn the rig on, load the game, I will get 5 mins of play then the computer reboots. After that it's fine to run the game. I have had no luck finding out what is causing the game to reboot the computer.

Thought about rolling back to win 8 but I really cbf'd.

Vallelunga is a tricky track to learn these beasts on but I think it's good for me. So much time to be found by smoothing out my lines and braking a little sooner than I was initially.

I had my first run since last Tuesday, there were new Nvidia drivers released while I was away and in the release notes.

Download the Nvidia 361.60 Geforce driver as released by NVIDIA.

Nvidia has released this driver with very scarce information, "clocking related issues" Apparantly at addresses an issue where memory clock speed was not running at full speed with certain apps/games. GeForce Hot Fix driver version 361.60 that addresses the following issues:
•Crashes in Photoshop & Illustrator
•Install & clocking related issues

Seems this may have fixed my crashing issue as I ran a couple hours with no crashes, maybe this has saved my w10 install.

Its been up all week Just search for xgn and it should always come up. The servers are up 24/7 and normally prac server goes up after the race nite ready for the next round setup.

Here are the server stats on medium tyres, as softs havent been used much and are about 1 sec quicker.

http://52.62.71.102:50041/lapstat?track=vallelunga-vallelunga_osrw&cars=ks_audi_r8_lms,bmw_z4_gt3,ks_lamborghini_huracan_gt3,ks_mclaren_650_gt3,mclaren_mp412c_gt3,mercedes_sls_gt3,ks_mercedes_amg_gt3,ks_nissan_gtr_gt3,ks_glickenhaus_scg003&valid=1,2&date_from=&date_to=&tyres=%28M%29&currservers=acserver

Also I just remembered that I am going to the tennis tomorrow nite and so wont be able to race. If you want to use my server wally I will open it up again and give access. Its been a while since anyone has bothered to try attack the servers so maybe they are over it by now.  ;D

Even the server as is currently can be used and session lengths can easily be changed ingame with commands with "X"being the time or race laps. This is open to adjusting in the prac server for most xgn guys so if your in the server on your own and just want to run more laps in qualy. Adjust the length of session then skip sessions and it will use the new times until server is reset or the lenght changed. Also server admin pass is the regular xgn pass.

Maybe you dont have the additional Vallelunga OSRW layout, this would mean it wont show up if you have the DLC button not showing content you dont have. I dont know if that track is in Wally's season track pack as its just the pre season test and not an actual season.

After this round the server will be running only tracks from Wally's season pack an my regular servers will just run official regular grid tracks to make it easier for the public to not have to deal with being up to date on these tracks.

Server is UP.

If you can't join, make sure you've download the track from the opening post: http://www.mediafire.com/download/q74me3zw4r6bq4f/Vallelunga_OSRW_31pits.rar

Extract the 'content' folder in the zip file into steamapps\common\assettocorsa, and say yes to merge/replace any files.

Scoring: I'll be scoring tonight using the season scoring - i.e. top 10 qualifiers get some points each race.

Well done to Paul, driving the Lamborghini in both races, with the clear pace advantage, taking out both poles and both wins.
Stan had the fastest lap time in race 1, in the BMW Z4, while Michael F had the fastest lap in race 2, again in the BMW Z4.

Bad luck fellas. AJ, I feel your pain after last week. Freezer, I came home from a mountain bike trip covered in blood one time, courtesy of hitting a protruding root which pitched me over the handlebars, onto the rocky path. But it was just grazes.

The racing was good. Very close, with quite a few packs. I had several hard fought battles, on people's bumpers struggling to make a pass stick, which left me sweaty, so I'm really looking forward to the season.

I tried the Nissan (my first choice), which was fast and loose, and also the Z4, which felt very stable and grippy, but marginally slower - maybe more downforce.

Good fun, happy with the Audi... biggest issue was no track time before last night with this car.

Still, a few more hours on track and more setup tweaking should get that time down a bit more :)

Great field and will be interesting to see the cars all perform differently on each track... was already evident last night  ;D

We had a great race Rolz. I couldn't pressure you into a mistake, and couldn't find a pass.

I've found in the Nissan at least, that fiddling with the setup hasn't really gained me a heap of time.

Yeah was tops! Either chasing or being chased is probably the best part of racing here... plenty of close skill matchups so it makes it so more enjoyable than just trying to punch out PB's all the time...

Don't get me wrong that's fun too!! :P but getting that "looking in the rear-view mirror" sweat going certainly gives me one hell of a buzz as the brain is just on overload to keep it all together  ;D

Excellent night of the racings for the StanDaamage!!  :D
Got a pair of 2nds and a got the hunter award for both races (I loves the huntings!! blowtorch - on!!)

Race 1, went with the BMW, had my first lap on softs in qually and they worked a treat for that one lap. Started just behind Paul in his Lambo and that's where I stayed till the finish. We had some tight moments, but he stayed cool and didn't stuff up and took the win.

Race 2, jumped into the Audi, got lazy and stayed on my meds for qually, started 4th, slotted into 5th behind Fozzy (Michael F) when the race got going. Had another excellent battle for virtually the whole race with Fozzy, tucked up behind him with ma blowtorch on full!! Got lucky at the end, hard luck Fozzy, well done to Paul out front again in his mighty Lambo.

Love the GT3's, tough track to pass at Vallelunga but still heaps of fun seeing where everyone has their strengths and weaknesses!!
 :P :D :P

Well done to Paul, driving the Lamborghini in both races, with the clear pace advantage, taking out both poles and both wins.
Stan had the fastest lap time in race 1, in the BMW Z4, while Michael F had the fastest lap in race 2, again in the BMW Z4.

Who is this Paul? Could he be a GB slayer?  :o

You're right Joe!!
Paul is the chosen one for sure!!
But one must first defeat Marty (GB's evil minion) to get a shot at taking down the dreaded GB!!

It's good to have some more challengers at the pointy end.  Don't forget Matthew either. Struggle Street Racing Crew have been playing their cards close to their chest.

Racing was fun for the most part. Got turned around by Michael F towards the end of the first lap of race one, was a pity too. I left him more than a cars width he still managed to hit me. Could have been an awesome battle for the the final podium position too had it not ended before it even really started. Managed to recover to seventh position, but damage to the front splitter during the aforementioned contact meant I struggled for the rest of the race, especially through turn one and for straight line speed. Had some good battles with Phil, Wally and Bird. The pass for seventh with about three laps to go had Bird and me side by side for three quarters of a lap.

Grabbed the Audi for race two, had only done a handful of laps at Vallelunga in the R8. Was following Bird and Wally again after some close racing with Bach and Rolz. Unfortunately Wally caught the curb in front of me and I couldn't avoid contact. What resulted was a pretty lurid slide that left me on the racing line and in the path of Bach, a pretty spectacular T boning meant my car and my patience were toast.

Thanks for the racing guys. Hopefully people show a little more patience when the series starts.

'twas good fun indeed.  I'm surprised how close these cars are to each other, altho the lack of turn-in under braking on the Nissan is a bit annoying.  For the 2nd race I have churned up the rear rollbar one click and it has helped a little, but now the car was prone to slide into the corner, which is a bit over the top :D

I had a couple of door bangers, too, just slight touches - it's good that you can do that without paying a high price for it.

Same as Wally, I'm bummed why a lot of setup changes don't have a more profound effect on the car (eg camber!) but I also found it amazing that if you dare to put your food down, it comes out of the corners amazingly well, somewhat sliding the rear but not enough to lose it - you just need to be sure you'll not run wide, as taking your foot off the loud pedal just makes things worse, so there's no recourse at that point.

WD Paul, hope you guys have lots of fun at the pointy end with GB, Marty & Phil - and possibly others, too ;)
I can seldom keep up with them.

I have driven a lot of GT3 cars in a lot of games now and you can drive them pretty hard in most iterations of them. I think they have fairly low amount of power for the aero that they produce. AC is no different, if anything you can drive them even harder in AC, especially once you turn the tyres on. I was applying power well before I got to the apex in most corners and as you say it's about riding that slight bit of rear end instability all the way to the exit.

Could accelerate early out of corners with the Mclaren but the Nissan was another matter for me. Found it drivable only after significant setup changes and learning to be extremely patient out of corners while completely abandoning any thoughts of using 1st gear  :) Never managed to take T1 flat out, at best slight throttle lift needed for the front to turn in. I'm hoping some of the other Nissan drivers would create and share a proper setup  ;D

Here's a setup I've used - I don't have a problem with it, it's very friendly.  This one has been made a bit more oversteery, so feel free to reduce the rear rollbar one tick, and add some wing if it gets too taily.

Also the tyre pressures and cambers might not suit other tracks.

1st gear no problems - I could floor it out of the tight corners without any trouble whatsoever  :)

Edit: T1 is a lift, indeed, can't take it flat-out in this car it'd seem.  Maybe if GB got his teeth into setup here...;)

I think Matthew and Jeremy are still practicing how to crash into eachother, they dont really need others to get in their way til the season starts. I think it should be quite interesting up front with quite a few up the pointy end in these cars this season.

I think team achilles wil be fielding a split car strategy and at least I should be around the early part of the season as I wont be travelling much til the second half of the year. Hopefully Guy can manage to make most of the races too and we can all have some good battles through the season with some newcomers and the regular crew up front.

Its the first non ballast season in fairly even cars so Im looking forward to it. I really havent driven the gt3 cars too much so just the last few weeks Ove had a bit of a go in a few to see which one id like for the season.

Very good to be back racing! First sprint was a bit solitary, but good to get a bit more consistent with the new car. Second race was a bit of a messy one for me, but fun.

Wally: I tried the SCG003 last night and it felt quite good---perhaps a tad too predictable, but could get loose enough to have some fun. I'll go with it. Thank you.

Unfortunately some damaged ribs from a recent mountain bike accident into a tree saw me out tonight.  But should be good to go for next week.

Feeling your pain mate, separated some cartilage a few weeks back. Sucks the big one.

Thanks Bird, but I have realised these cars are beyond me. I'll wait for the next season

C'mon, don't bail out before you've given it a proper try.
Just try to drive a bit more conservatively (brake earlier, apply the throttle a bit gentler) until you get used to it.
If you need help with setup or driving tips, post your question, and it'll be answered.

Btw; have you tried the Nissan?  It's really not hard to drive - altho it's not as fast as a lambo :) You need to be really wild to spin it - once the tyres are up to temp, that is.  It's a bitch on colds.    So when you're practising or hotlaping, I strongly recommend the "tyre blankets" option to avoid a couple of laps of real pain in the butt.

p.s. It often takes a whole season for me to get used to a car!

Hi Sin - what Bird said... We're here all for racing fun!

Doesn't matter where you start - Tuesday nights is where I have learnt the most and arguably raced against some of the best drivers in AC.

Learning setups, and racelines... when I started I new the word apex but didn't know how important it was.
I was a racing noob big time... not quite noob anymore, but improving ;)

And the racing... the glorious 20+ ppl on a track racing. Pub servers here in Aus average 5-10

The best part now is we'll have 30ppl for this season... Epic.

Comeon u wanna stay  ;D

Dont even bother with the soft tyres they are rubbish. They really wont be of any use at 2x tyre wear as I tried to make a setup to run some rsr laps and its way trickier then setting it up for a race. Getting the soft tyres up for a lap is quite a challenge but they are only at their best for 1 lap, this is after a very controlled build up of pace on the outlap. I havent even bothered trying the softs in the prac server as they turn to poo no matter what you do on the outlap by the end of the lap.

Go too hard and you will overheat and wear the tyres before the hotlap is done, dont go hard enough on the outlap and your going to lose put in the first part b of the lap under pressured and not up to full grip as the tyres arent scrubbed enough.

The way the season is best off to just make a race setup and qualify on the mediums with just less fuel. The medium tyres are way more predictable and stable with a small drop off during the run.

ABS and TC is allowed so if needed use these especially ABS there is little reason to turn that off. TC play with settings if needed and dont worry too much about the fastest lap times. Just stay on track at a comfortable pace and with the large fields you should have some fun battles wherever you are in the pack.

Over the longer distances outright lap pace isnt going to be the most important its consistancy and dealing with the tyre wear. Up front the pace will be fairly silly but there are a few pretty quick guys in this season. The mid pack os still fairly strong but may be 2-3 seconds off the pace this round but there should be some good battles all the way through the pack.
