Title: Dec 30 fun race: Nissan Primera BTCC at Silverstone
Post by: Wally on December 14, 2014, 12:40:59 PM
Three sprints in the 1999 BTCC Nissan Primera at the three Silverstone variants.

Race 1: National, 15 laps
Race 2: International, 13 laps
Race 3: Full, 7 laps

CAR DOWNLOAD  (https://www.dropbox.com/s/zl5etnv63ezkj31/nissan_primera_btcc.zip?dl=0)(includes sound fix and a collection of skins).

Original car thread is here (http://www.assettocorsa.net/forum/index.php?threads/pm3dm-1999-nissan-primera-btcc-sound-fix-version-0-2a-rim-tire-template-added.2372/).

The Nissan blitzed the 1999 field to romp home with the drivers championship and the manufacturer's championship, in their last year of competing in the BTCC.

I'll be making qualifying very short (after a reasonable practice time), to only allow enough time for about 2 hot laps, to mix the grid up a bit.

No sign up required - I'll make it a passworded server with no fixed GUIDs.

To ensure everyone runs the same version and physics of any mod car Wally you can get the car server checksum working on mod cars.

All thats needed is to copy over the car folder into the server content/cars. You onky need the data folder so delete all other files and inside the data folder any file that is 0kb must be deleted for the checksum to work properly.

This way it means people dont end up with different versions of a mod as quite often physics are changed quite a bit with each build.

Good plan.

The Nissan feels OK, but I can lose the rear quite easily under brakes. Needs a bit of setup fiddling.

I havent driven it very much but FWD cars do tend to get lift off overstear and so keeping a bit of gas into the corner can help with that. It is the case with the Abarth 500 but when I tried this mod a while back it seemed a bit too planted in comparison.

Its probably changed a bit since but being too quick on brakes and off throttle will shift the weight forward quickly causong the rear to let go. Giving it power should instantly take it from oversteer to understeer so playing with throttle is pretty important in any FWD car that can lose rear on entry.

A well done FWD can actually be very good practice dealing with this as its much easier to deal with then a rwd mid engine car that also is prone to lift off oversteer. In those you need to use steering to catch the rear but fwd you can play with the throttle off oversteer and throttle on understeer to balance it through corners. For a very tight corner you can get the rear sliding on entry then gradualy add gas to straighten it up again.

Rather then my jibberish you can watch this cool video I just found that explains all the technique needed for a fwd car.

It's been a fun little car to strap around...
It got me to use my left foot for breaking and it's really helped control sliding and keeping corner speed up...

Since then I've moved the practice to the GT3 cars and other flappy paddel cars and improved my PB's quite a bit...

Can't wait to race it tonight with whomever is online  ;D

These sort of cars should give some good close racing, I think its always good to try all types of cars you will normally pick something up that may help in another car and also get another look at the track. I still right foot brake most of the time even in gt cars but do some corners with the left foot in some cars if needed.

Gets a bit hectic if driving a manual car using clutch and braking with either foot at time with some heel and toe.  ;)

Ha, I didn't even realise it was front wheel drive. That explains a lot.

Yea if you dont realise its FWD then you will have more trouble with the lift off over steer, a FWD just floor it and its become under-steer and you just need to find a balance point. If you try and catch it the same way you would a RWD car then your just going to loop it all day long.
 ;D

I did just run a couple laps and found it to fairly planted but setup changes didnt make a huge amount of difference. The softs will cook fronts for me fairly quick but I think it should be a fun nite with some close racing. Didn't try many laps or other tyres yet and also the default setup was about 5mm too low to pass in pit one at Silverstone National. Need to either raise front height or stiffen front a bit, I tried stiffening but made it a bit too understeery. The rear wing defaults at 10 which is max and reducing this to 5 I could barely tell any difference in speed or balance.

FYI, grip will just be at 100% all the time, just to keep it simple while we're getting familiar with a new car.

Here are some race results (http://xgnassettocorsa.blogspot.com/2014/12/fun-run-nissan-primera-at-silverstone.html).

I had good fun in these cars, although I never really got the car stable under braking, with the rear always really loose. I did shift the brake bias a little more forwards in race 3, and that helped a bit. I had some good close racing, and some nice opposite lock slide catches. Race 1 was a bit of a write off though - I looped the car under brakes a couple of times, and tagged the rear of Flattop's car after taking ages to catch up to him. Sorry about that, but at least you were able to keep going.

was lots of fun, thanks wally and even better I got through every race without disconnecting for first time in ages.  I read that rsr can cause it so i removed it and so far so good, fingers crossed

A nice easy fix hopefully after the frustrating disconnects.

No problems Wally i think most of the faster  runners forget my crappy driving and get caught  by my early braking.
Oh. ... i thought i "had taken a long time letting 'you' catch up" ;D

Liked the car with more practice i may have been a little closer to the pack, but did notice the time difference wasn't extreme... if to look at results now.
Thanks Wally.

Sorry for the now show last night, would have liked to have a run in this one.
Lucky for me my new Graphics card turned up yesterday.  (plus I got a new TV, so there was a lot of IT work happening in the house).
New card is excellent, cranked all settings to max (previously only mid due to performance) and things are now very pretty and super smooth.
Should take half a second off my lap times...!!   ;D

Nice. The extra smoothness will help for sure. What card did you get?

I didn't have Guy's pace but I had the measure of Marty. 8)
I can't remember who it was that put me onto 'RealHeadMotion' app after Spa last series, but thank you! :-*
My results have improved dramatically since then. ;D

Top night's racing lads.  I have never driven a FWD car in anger before but this car seems to me to be the only mod I've tried that handles in a believable way.  It certainly led to some good racing.

The last race was great fun starting from the back.  I reckon hard tyres are the go though.  The softs go off a bit too quickly and the mediums are absolutely useless - they are slower than the softs and seem to go off almost as quick.

Well last night was brilliant... really good to be back into it... last week was a bit of a false start due to a few Xmas drinks beforehand and then realising I didn't have an hour to practice... (Qld Time) or straighten up a bit.

Still the closest racing I've had the pleasure of taking part in so far... that race 2 battle with djosh and Wally was tops... so close, but so clean!

It's funny that the FWD car was probably the most forgiving for me to date... or maybe I've learned to recover better.... but you get it accidentally sideways it was possible to bring it back... though wheel correction was frantic!   :P

Thanks again for a top night!
Hope you all have a very safe and Happy New Years celebrations tonight!

See you in the new year with more racing!  ;D

Really enjoyed the racing, had some great battles in the first 2 races. I kind of struggled with setup changes made for race 3 and it got silly loose at times lol. Good thing with a fwd car is no matter how sideways you get it give it some gas along with steering and you wil save it 99% of the time.

Spent quite a bit of time on Bachulums's bumper in the first 2 races. I just didnt have the pace on him where I needed it. He always drives good solid pace and lines and Ive never got by him very easily. Im sure a little bump pass would be easier but I always try to avoid contact.

Race 1 was a real good battle in the lead pack minus GB who did his own thing. But I did manage to sneak in the quickest race lap on the mediums so Ihad some pace but started a little too far back then they let go pretty bad for the last couple laps and I just hung on.

Race 2 I went hards and they were a little slow early and so I lost a spot to Bacchulum who was on softs. Mid race my tyres did get better but I still couldnt make the move on him. Got alongside a few times but never finished the move. Then Guy came back and joined the party and we had some good battles swapping places and a bit of 3 wide action.

No contact in any of this which was pretty impressive. Last lap I tried the dive Bomb on bacchulum but could see it wasnt going to work. So I turned a little tighter to the kerb and hit one of the little apex posts which sent my car in the air.  ;D

Starting at the back race 3 I wasnt too sure about my drastic changes so took it a but easy early. Didnt gain enough spots and had quite a few big moments. Not consitant enough and just couldnt pass so many. I got Stan thanks to his cheating  :D but then I also ende on 3 penalties. The first one I ran wide avoiding a spinner at copse but the other 2 were fair and I think I should have got one more at t1 apex which Incut quite hard with no warning. I though I was in trouble when on 2 warning O ran wide on beckets and chapel but luckily only the 1 warning there.

Really good fun in these cars, next week should be fun too. The Abarth I have driven a bit but not much in the Alfa.

Ha ha!!
I'm a professional beta tester for Wally's 'Stranglerly Python' software development company.
I can report that the '4 strikes and your out' app works a treat!! And as a bonus, it seems to work on different races as well.

(I'm secretly in awe of Wally's app, legendary effort  :D)
