Title: AC server browser android app
Post by: Wally on July 19, 2015, 10:52:35 PM
Following on from Guybrush's suggestion to have a quick way of seeing who's online, I've made a start on an Android app to do just that. This is where it's at so far - the beginnings. There's still quite a way to go. I want to add more information, let you expand a row to see who's actually online, let you search for servers... maybe get notifications when someone comes online on a server you're watching (maybe - that seems a bit difficult so far, but I haven't started unravelling that one).

If you have any suggestions or wishlist items, let me know.

Very cool!
Do I need to send you an old iPhone so you can do the same for Apple?  ;D

Sure, if you also send me the cash to buy an iMac to develop on :)

Nice fast start Wally.
Wish list:
No pink or ponies
Limit number of returned servers
ie top 50 by #racers
Sort by column

I can send you an old Android, it's probably better than your iDevice  ;)

If you are prepared to run VMWare I can show you how to load a virtual Mac... works well as I have to support Mac users these days as well.

The joys of being the "friend in IT"

I have a SG4 collecting dust that I was going to use as a dash for AC, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

For phone use I'm an iPhone user at preset... and happy with it  :P

I've done that in the virtual Mac thing in the past... but Apple development is a totally alien language to me. At least Android apps are written in Java.

These are the things I would use, but may not be possible:

*  Add servers to a watched list
*  Set alert when more than "x" people are in any of your watched servers
*  Add drivers to a friends list and set alert for when they are in a server
*  Be able to see where friends are - which server.
*  Be able to filter for ping less than "x" (this may not be possible as the phone wouldn't ping the server would it?)
*  Sort by ping / players.
*  Be able to set when alerts are given - ie. between 7pm and 9pm each work day and 9am and 10pm on a weekend, etc.

Post by: Wally on July 20, 2015, 07:02:54 PM
Dunno about the ping. The lobby reports the server country, but we've seen that can be misleading.

The rest is probably doable. Anyway, baby steps... I'll keep tinkering, refining, extending.

Post by: Guybrush Threepwood on July 20, 2015, 07:10:18 PM
Yeah, I sort of figured if you could do a multi-country server search, such as Aus, US, NZ, Indo, etc. you could effectively filter for ping?  Maybe there could also be a list of pre-set countries for those in certain regions, so European countries, Asian, Americas, etc that people could select instead of typing them all in.

Progress shot:

Shows cars, track, session, pickup or booked, password protected servers.

Good stuff Wally. I assume any kind of notification on players would be a bit difficult because you have to query each server to get a player list? Maybe could have the option for the user to shortlist servers they want player notifications for, that way could just do all XGN/Marty servers etc.

It could poll all the servers on the background, but that would be pretty heavy. An alert on just favourite servers would probably be feasible. It might drain your battery!

Another idea which probably isn't probable.

Would be good if you could "pre-commit" to a server using the app.  So say that you'd be keen to race on such and such a server and then you go off and tend to your bonsai tree, and then if enough people pre-commit it sends an alert and you can all jump on.  The pre-commit's could expire every 30 minutes or something?  Maybe only being able to Pre-commit to one server at a time?

Dunno.  Maybe it would be too difficult as you would need a database keeping all the information of who has and hasn't committed to what, and then have this info uploaded to the app.

OAN, is it possible to have the information that might be available in the app, available in a web browser as well?

It's sort of usable already. I gotta make it scale better for different devices yet. You want to be a beta tester, Monsieur Threepwood?

I can test it on a note 4 which is fairly high res at 2560x1440 so we can see how it scales on that.

So while definitely not hungover in work today, and definitely not during work hours, I knocked up a web based server browser:

http://ac.yeahyou.com:3001/

On desktop it looked better with the servers in a table, but tables don't scale down to mobile. The mobile view is okay, but it could probably be better.

The search box searches server name, country, track or cars. It only works on a single word at the moment, i'll look at doing multi-word searches that search over different fields, so I could type in mugello caterham for example and see all servers with that track car combo.

Oh look, Dave and Gratulin are online :)

Excellent work so far genitalmen, what is obvious is, if possible, to filter out the locked servers, to be able to sort by number of players, and if you can use multiple searches - so say i want to search for all servers in Australia and the United States that are running the Robbin.
Title: Re: AC server browser android app

Looking good Joe. I report on the people actually online, not the clients reported, as that can be the number of booked clients only, not who's actually online.

Guybrush, yes the idea is to add filters like exclude locked servers etc, add favourites etc.

Yeah that part was annoying me. How are you getting that though without polling every server?

If you want to try it in its current state, you can download the APK file here: https://www.mediafire.com/?mdn3n8yspbmagyw
on your Android device.
Because it's not on the Google Play store, you'll have to go to your settings and go to the Security section and allow installation from unknown sources (other than the play store).

Post by: Guybrush Threepwood on July 25, 2015, 06:01:43 PM
Awesome work so far Wally.  AND I noticed it's sorted by highest number of players first :)

Only problem is that my phone has come up with a virus warning (avast) "suspicious file detected - APK:CloudRep [Susp]"

I'm guessing that's just because I installed an unauthorised app.  I just hit the ignore button.
Title: Re: AC server browser android app
Post by: Wally on July 25, 2015, 06:51:36 PM
Great! The goal of this app is primarily to show you where the people are racing right now, so putting the busiest servers up the top makes sense.

I don't know how the app can get a virus rep yet, given that you're the only person who's used it :)
It might be because the installer has got a very generic name. More spit and polish to come.

Post by: Guybrush Threepwood on July 25, 2015, 07:55:12 PM
Yeah, I thought it was a good move to sort by player numbers.  Makes it a lot easier.  I'm watching F1 practice and checking the app, waiting for someone to jump onto one of Marty's servers!

Is it possible to make it refresh any quicker?  Could it do a run to see which servers have players in them (and if you were able to filter out locked servers / other filters) and only poll those particular servers?

Title: Re: AC server browser android app
Post by: Wally on July 25, 2015, 09:51:01 PM
Yessir... The plan is to allow you to set up a list of favourites and only refresh them, or update a single server etc.
Title: Re: AC server browser android app
Post by: marty on July 26, 2015, 11:24:03 AM
Just gave it a run, seemed a bit slow at retrieving the server list on 4g optus network. Maybe thats because while its running Wally is also sucking data out of your  device which is only fair enough.  :D

Also when I rotated the screen from portrait to landscape the retrieved data was lost and needed a refresh to get the list again.

Pretty cool once it all downloaded, it would be cool if clicking on a server would bring up a list of the guys in the server. Also if we could do a search as in the game lobby where you can type for example xgn marty and just show servers with that in the name.

The initial server list isn't too bad... but then it has to go and query each inividual server to find out who's on it, which is a bit slow. It happens in the background though, so you can start using the list that's displayed already. I still want to see if I can speed that bit up a bit.

The screen rotation is a known issue... there's technical reasons why the app can't keep the data, especially if it's still being fetched in the background. But it's on the to-do list, lower priority.

I've aleady got it bringing up the player names now when you click on an entry. It also shows you how many laps, and how many minutes left in a prac/qual session.

I still want to add various search features - like server and player, as well as management of server favourites.

New version 0.1: https://www.mediafire.com/?8c3ye336yakxu88 (https://www.mediafire.com/?8c3ye336yakxu88)

I'm not sure if you have to uninstall your previous version, or overwrite it with this one.
This adds the ability to click on a server and bring up its details showing who's on the server.
Shows time left in a session and race laps.
Also placeholder menu options such as search, settings etc. Refresh on the server details doesn't work yet.

Nice addition Wally.  Could you make it that if you are viewing the players in a server and you hit refresh, it only refreshes the information for that server?

You've probably got a heap to work on so I'll keep the suggestions to a minimum! :)

Good stuff Wally!

I updated the web version this afternoon to poll any servers with clients on load to get rid of those empty booked servers. It also sorts by clients so the list order dynamically changes as it loads. Added a drop down to change sort order and you can now search by driver name.

I was thinking if there were to be any alerts built into it then you'd need some sort of passive auto-refresh to pick up when players are on, etc. when you aren't using the phone./device.

Here's version 0.4.

https://www.mediafire.com/?r1a1920m2b9dda2

You can now click on the star icon top right on the main menu (with a red ring around it in the screen shot) to toggle displaying of your favourites. It will refresh the server list and only display servers you had previously marked as favourites from the main list. It remembers your preference, so if you only ever care about your favourites, that's all it will display.

I have released this on the Google Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.wallymasterson.acserverbrowser) (to make updates easier), or search for "Assetto Corsa Server Browser" in the Play Store. I've charged $2 for the app to recoup the cost of listing on the Play Store.

In this version, I've added search, so you can search for online players by name (or also search for servers, cars and tracks), and also added a help page.

I plan to add notifications to the app one day. When someone joins... When a server has people on it... When a server goes down...

Notifications are nearly working... my tablet showed that Grat's been jumping on the practice server.

Looking forward to it.

Is the favourites list dependent on the IP address of the server, or the name?  So what changes for the favourite to disappear?

Currently its the name, but I'll change it to IP address and port number, because names change.

For some reason when I try searching for this app on the Google store it doesn't come up.  I've done "AC Server browser" and "Assetto Corsa" and not finding it.

Not sure how searches work on the Google Play store, but might be worth optimising it eventually?

I found it under "Assetto Corsa", but not "AC server browser". I'm not sure why it's not showing for you.

Thanks for the ratings guys, by the way.

I've set up a beta test program for version 1.1, which adds notifications on players joining your favourite servers. If you already have the app and want to beta test this new version, PM me the gmail email address that you purchased it with, and I will invite you to the beta program. The new version should then appear as an update in the play store. I've never done this before, so that's the theory at least.

I'd like to test this on a few different devices before it goes out into the wild.

Thank you beta testers!

New version 1.1 released!
New version 1.1 released!

And GB, I found the bug where servers that you searched for and favourited weren't having the orange star show up straight away. I also changed the "Server" heading on the list to "All Servers" or "Favourite Servers".

Great work Wally.  It's really coming into its own with the notifications.  Was sitting around not doing much tonight when I got an alert on one of the NZ server so jumped on and had some great racing. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.  I especially like it that you can make it only send for alerts during specified times of the day (does it still search the servers all day?).

I've been telling a lot of people online about it and most are really interested but are using an Apple phone.

No, it only searches the servers between the hours you specify. Thanks for plugging it :)

For some reason my app won't update. I've tried uninstalling and downloading but still seems to be the beta version.  Could I he stuck as a beta tester somehow?

Sometimes it takes a while for new versions to become available in the play store. But I also just now disabled beta testing, so see if that makes a difference.

Dumb question probably but will this work fine if I use an Android Tablet or does it have to be a smartphone?
