Title: S14R7: Spa Race Chat
Post by: Wally on November 15, 2016, 11:41:57 PM
This round is a 24 lap endurance round at Spa (1 CPS for tyres only, 1 CPS for fuel only).
You will need the OSRW PIT MOD (http://www.mediafire.com/download/eduznna58n158gz/Spa_40pits_AC1.7.rar).

Fuel rate is 1.8x.
Tyre wear rate is 1.5x.

Weather is 14, Light Clouds, and this is a wet race. To simulate wet but drying conditions, track grip will start at 85% and grip up to 100% by the end of the race.

What will be the track grip gain setting Wally? I have put up a server with those settings, will the race be the same 1x fuel and 1x tyres stop as I think with low temps and grip the graining could get fairly bad and some may want to change tyres twice.

I just worked that out - 160. That should see grip go from 85 to 88 over the course of the race. I also just changed it to Light Clouds instead of Mid Clouds (I find mid clouds gets too dark).

I posted above 1.8x fuel and 1.5x tyres. Yes, two tyre changes might be a good strategy, but a tyre stop is a relatively long one. Still, if you're refuelling anyway, the time hit is not as bad.

Marty, would you mind preparing my car with a big bag of sand in it? Around 50kg would do just right...

It should be there and I moved your car back down the entry list so it shouldn't be taken by any non league drivers, if you get the wrong car by any chance you can always add ballast to your own car. The server password is the regular xgn pass you can log in as admin by having the password in the lobby when joining.

You can also do it once in server by using the admin command
/admin "password"
then to get your car ID type
/client_list
to add 50kg ballast change X to the car ID you have been assigned
/ballast_id X 50

You shouldn't have to do this though as the car assigned to your GUID same as Simone should be preloaded with some weight.

There's also now an AC app that lets you add ballast offline.

Low grip doesnt need rain tyres as its still not a wet road, Ive ran those gip levels before and its not that bad. Plus everyone will be in the same (maserati) dry boat.  ;D

Being an enduro, fast track low grip and hard tyres the tyre temps will be well below optimal most likely. If the car gets sliding it should raise temps. Graining will be an issue to some point but seeing last round even woth heavy graining and cold temps with higher tyre wear it was only about .5 slower at the end of 16 laps on the tyres.

Strategy will likely come into it more but I think ot will be the same as all other enduros so far. Ideally spread tyres to half a race each and fuel stop a bit earlier. Pretty much stopping 2x just because its a requirement but a single stop for fuel and tyres is all you really need.

i don't understand if its not wet why is it so slippery then, Ice, moss ?  surely just a cold dry road wouldn't be so slippery unless something else

It's just for a bit of fun, a different challenge. We used to race in rain netKar. It was mostly just more slippery. It was a great white knuckle, eyes wide open,  no blinking ride. This low grip here is "rain-like", and the test will be to see who can adapt their driving and pit strategy to it.

Think of it as "starting to rain but not wet enough for wet tyres so I'm going to stay out on slicks" racing.

It's not my fault it rained there for the Blancpain race there this year ;)

Alright, I tell you what I'll do. Should make it interesting. The race will start at 85% grip and end at 100%, to sort of simulate initially wet and then drying conditions.

Sounds like it will be a fun event... Although I was hoping I could have some assistance with AC before this race. I'm getting an error on start up and the only thing it appears to have affected is the pitconfig app. In turn this is killing me during the pit stops loosing seconds each time I need to pit, this race being a multi stop I was hoping to have it resolved before then.

I won't babble on with the symptoms but could any point me in the right direction to seek help?

Whats the error?
Try removing the pitconfig folder and restarting else right click on game title in Steam Library.  Select Properties then under Local Files tab  "verify integrity of game".

What's the error?
The error is:
ERRORS with content: ks_silverstone-gp_osrw/gp_osrw,
ks_silverstone-international_osrw/international_osrw,
ks_silverstone-national_osrw/national_osrw, view log for details

I tried sifting through the log with no luck (my computer skills are quite basic). I tried re-installing silverstone track and associated files (osrw pit mod), tried re-installing pit config.

The symptoms experienced are the pitconfig box was no longer visible even though it was activated in the main menu. When I went to pit, it flashed up the pit options for a split second then went immediately to changing fuel and tyres (this hurt my Silverstone race). I turned off pitconfig in the main menu and everything runs as it should with the exception of the error message on start up.

I'll try verifying the integrity of the game when I get home tonight.

Any other suggestions welcome.

I double checked and the files were in the right destination, which they were.

I ran the integrity check and 1 file was bad and redone.

I launched the game and the error remained. I figured I wasn't in much need the OSRW for Silverstone anytime soon so I removed all the OSRW Silverstone files & folders, the error did not return and the Pitconfig is once again operational.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I look forward to Spa  :D

Or not.

I think 85% is actually pretty take for a "wet" track. If you compare to them actually racing, something around 75% is probably more realistic - if I were racing I'd be keen for the grip to be lowered for some fun :)

I have renamed the xgn tuesday practice server to XGN Tuesdays so this means the lap stat link will be changed to this.

http://52.65.162.16:50041/lapstat?currservers=XGN%20Tuesdays

This is to make it much easier to find the lapstats in server as it doesnt automatically load the current server in ptracker, calling it XGN Tuesdays should make this easier.

Wd Mael and if the rain gets heavier it may stay there. It would really be nice if we had proper weather in AC but its still something many seem to ask for but then complain when they realize its more then just for pretty screenshots. Less grip and visibilty seems to be  a couple things many complain about yet its also likely from people asking for rain and night racing.
Title: Re: S14R7: Spa Race Chat

My understanding from a pair of phrases from Kunos is that they would not like to have rain being just low grip and graphics. They'd like to have puddles, normal line getting slippery, and aquaplaning, all simulated. And that at the state they are, they do not think it is something they can do without a serious investment of time and resources. But they need to allocate both, at least for now, to things that bring revenues a bit more certainly and sooner.

But I keep my fingers crossed. It would be really cool.

The slightly annoying thing is they had rain in netKar Pro which looked good graphically, and puddled on the track giving you variable grip. They had the technology, but didn't add it to AC for some reason.

A reminder - you can only change tyres ONCE. One pitstop is for fuel only, the other is for tyres only.

It should be an interesting race, with the drying track changing from grip of 85% to 100% at the end. At 85% the car drifts a bit more, and the rear can swing out a bit. It will be interesting to see how people cope with the changing car behaviour over the course of the race. There will probably be more accidents early on, with more passing opportunities.

I only ran my first laps here tonight with low grip only, its really not much different to how it has handled at other tracks with higher grip. Car is fairly well balanced and braking really isnt any worse which I expected that to struggle most. You simply need to slow it enough to make the apex and the grip level overall doesnt seem to make it any worse.

Sure it will get much quicker as the grip builds but thats about all, it will be up to who can adapt to the changing grip the most but then also setup wise having only ran low grip laps. A car that feels good at that grip may turn to crap as the grap builds balance wise, seems lap speed is in how much track is used at Eau Rogue and Blonchimont but seeing PLP is much stricter then in game limits the quicker line in prac server is most likely not valid with PLP.

its amazing how the game feels different to different people, for me its easy locking brakes, after using my grandmothers braking points,  then understeer on entry , then oversteer on exit, basically opposite to Marty
Title: Re: S14R7: Spa Race Chat
Post by: marty on November 22, 2016, 11:16:50 AM
To me its much like driving a street car with semi slicks at this grip rather then a race car with slicks. If your expecting it to have plenty of grip then you will have issues but drive to the grip levels its not much different to any other car with less grip.

On a real track you have no control over weather or track conditions so you simply have to deal with what you have. There is no point complaining as everyone is in the same position and those accepting the challenge will likely do better then those putting themselves on the back foot complaining about things they have no control over.  ;)

I was away all week so didnt practice before last night, I also checked the Tuesday vs Thursday prac server lap count. General public woud also likely be scared off by the lower grip.

223 valid laps Tuesday server with nearly 3 minute laps if you include invalid laps its 459 laps in this weeks combo.

Thursday practice server 28 valid laps 46 includong invalid.  With laptimes 1 minute shorter. ;)

Thats not simulating a damp or very green track, just a normal track condition. Spa is very often low grip as its gets very cold and can stay damp all day in such conditions.

There are no wet physics and so we also dont have wet tyres. A wet track is mosty just more slippery then a dry track but also the water on track cools tyres more so softer compounds are used for wets. They also need some groves to clear water so less surface area to the track which means even an inter tyre has lower grip then a slick.

Main reason people would go on a slick asap even if its too cold as long as there isnt standing water they need to clear as it will be faster then a wet tyre on a damp track. Also a soft wet tyre would overheat quickly on a drying track so if we had rain and proper wet tyres and physics it wouldnt be much different to what this is other then visually and possibly a more dynamic track with drying line and puddles.

Driving on a wet track really means three things in real life:
1. the wet racing line is different to the dry racing line because of the way the track is rubbered,
2. Reduced visibility
3. Reduced traction

Can't do anything about 1 or 2, but we can reduce grip as per 3. Even if AC simulated rain, all that's pretty much missing from the look & feel of racing in the wet is raindrops on the windscreen.

Server's up.
