Good news for me, I was going to go reserve rather than have Imp drop out after having his AC appetite being whet.

Looking forward to this track. Not that well practiced on it. Love that off camber right hander that I just keep drifting off the track. Every time! and the s's before the final hairpin. love it. After all, it's Mugello.

and big Grats to all of you who ended up in the DTMs. Lot of long straight bits in Mugello.

No worries Speedy. No internet is a good reason. I'll put you back on the grid for this race.

Yes! Mugello is definitely my strongest track, it just seems to suit me. A bit of 'strategy' last night means I'm in the DTM so I'm aiming for top 5 next week!

Hey Dick if you aren't in a team maybe we can setup a West Aussie one? I'm definitely not in contention for the lead so don't mind helping out where I can, plus us westies got to stick together!

Mugello is probably my favourite track in AC, although I'm not the quickest around it.  Love the mix of undulating track, fast and medium speed sweeping corners.

Mate, you are in!
Go west Aussies!!! You do realize you will be carrying me all season?  :D
I heard Wally saying something about West Aussie teams get double points as well. Which will be handy.

still open to team names. Buzzkill is my home-brewery name. But am open to anything.

Maybe "Dickjet Race Team"?

We'll need a team car skin! I'll be on for a few hours tomorrow evening and same on Friday... maybe we can sort out skins, TS whisper and have our inaugural team practice  :D

what programs do you use to make the skins?

what programs do you use to make the skins?

Hi Phil!
Mostly in photshop. The scollops (purple blue stripes) i did in illustrator as it was easier.

PS. If anyone is wondering, there are skins to edit in the Dev folder for each car.
and I used this link to get me started on skinning,

Bird's leading the championship by just 3 points... but he's sick and a no show.
Darren's 3 points shy of the lead, but in a group A.
Glen's 7 points back, but in a DTM.
Will it be Darren or Glen to take out season 1,or will a dark horse from just a few points back steal the show?
Title: Re: Round 5: Mugello Race Chat
Post by: Glen73 on July 08, 2014, 04:13:36 PM
Don't think it will be me, I have struggled at this track even in a dtm. The harder I try the hotter my tires get the slower I go. Odds on for Darren for two strong drives and a championship win.

I'd have to put a few internet dollars on the flying Marsh.. But there is Guybrush there too.
But of cause! The DTMs... It could go to anyone!

It's going to be hard getting mixed in with DTM's around here so I predict Glen ftw. I gave up too many points with 2 shitty results last week.

Post by: Guybrush Threepwood on July 08, 2014, 04:51:54 PM
Just remember our arrangement Dick.  The one that you DON'T take out has "Guybrush" written on the back wing.  Make sure you scream "Allah!" over the mic into that first corner.

I haven't really practiced this track much lately, been too interested in the other mods and testing them out.  If I can get into the 2.02's I'll be a happy chappy.

Yeah last night was fun, I practiced a lot during the week and I'm pleased to see it paid off.

I had a shocking start to both races, watching the grid overtake me while I figured out the clutch

Very sorry for the accident early up in race two, I knew someone had a highish ping with the car warping around the place and I thought it was safe to pass.

Race one for me was all about putting in consistent lap times while waiting for Marty to crash :P
It was my only real chance of catching him, no such luck but I was still happy to finish 2nd.

The second race I had a shocking start and but I managed to go from 2nd to 11th I think. After some focus I slowly got back into the race. Thanks Glen for the good battle at the end.

Spectacular start to both last nights races with some biffo.  Unfortunately I got tangled up in the first lap but it made things interesting as I had a couple of decent battles after that.

Second race I managed to avoid the accident at T1 but had to jam on the brakes to avoid the flying E30 with 3 meter long invisible suspension keeping it's wheels on the ground.  I came up behind a group of cars and miss-judged how early one of them was going to brake and gave him a tap into T1.  It was a red car which I thought was Rolz so I kept going after I saw him go past me, but watching my video it was someone else!  So sorry for whoever that was (can't remember the name).  The rest of that race was fairly standard afair, trying to catch Darren and another DTM.

I have videos of both races, so I'll do a quick edit and post them up in the next day or 2.

Thanks for a great season Wally.  It's the first full season of sim racing I've ever done and it was great fun racing with you guys.  Now I look forward to the next one and the casual fun races also.

Thanks for the racing guys, and thanks Wally for running it all  8)

I got lucky in both races last night, managing to miss the crashes at the start of both races while Guy and Glen appeared to get caught up in both. If I'd taken the short gear set I probably would have been in the middle of them as well.

Overall the series was a bit of a mixed bag for me. Some races were good fun, but others got too mixed up by the mix of cars which neutered the potential for close competition somewhat. Hopefully we'll be able to do weight penalties in future.

Yer my race one I was in 2nd place, punted off, got going, punted off, got going, all most hit ESC sulking in the sand trap but kept going and got to 10th, race two was a consistent race for me finishing in 2nd with a fast closing Phil.

Even if I held my race one position of second to the end you would have still got me on points so nothing lost really, maybe a few points for the team, Bj didn't help matters by running off to grab a beveridge in race two (lol) while on grid. So he didn't get any points for race 2  ;D

Pat was a top bloke and I would like to get my name on the cup one day. Thanks for continuing that on Wally, I was hoping you would  ;)

It's a shame the replays aren't longer, I'd like to see the start of R1 again.
I missed some carnage and was in an intense battle with Grubbet (who was warping a bit) and never saw Darren in my mirros (I hate the V.mirror >:().
While trying to pass there was contact with Darren spinning me 'round but I think I chopped in and closed the door.
Like I said, I didn't even know he was there. :-[

Got and awesome start in Race 2 from 6th.
I went to pass Glen on the right just as he went right, so I changed the plan to left.
Then I saw why he went right, to miss the slow starting Phil but I was commited to the left and there was just enough room, so I ended up 2nd by turn 1. ;D ;D
Couldn't keep Glen or Phil behind though but my grunt helped keep Darren at bay.

Congrats Darren for the trophy and cheers Wally for the work. ;)

Id like to see Guybrush replays of both starts, was kind of surprised to get so far ahead into t1 both races. I think Phil must have been running much taller gearng as he qualied in p2 both raced but got bogged down both races letting me have t1 on my own. Im normally a poor starter so was a little surprised amd thanks for glen to give me the all clear in r1 even thogu I didnt respond as i had my mic off botg races.

speaking of starts.. What do you all do as the lights start flashing? Foot flat? 1/2 throttle? Just touching the red line? do you pump the gas up and down? I know Marty switches his mic to 'open' That's all I've learnt.
Title: Re: Round 5: Mugello Race Chat

Was happy with qualifying and dont know if anyone saw the replay of race one, but leaving softs on shot me off the line making up a number of positions to sit in 3rd, the wonders of softs soon wore off as the field passed by lap by lap.

Grubbets lag really hurt, i was held up because i just couldnt see where he was, one moment im just about to run up the back of him, next frame hes already around the corner. Are we able to pop a ping cap in for next season Wally?  Auto retire for high pingers would be good, i know i dont want to be doing the same to others.

Race two, first corner chaos, i played it very safe sitting up the inside of the first corner, after the corner i was side punted off the track which i was already sitting on the side of to avoid chaos and spun back onto the track, it was a massive mess. I didnt bother running the rest of the race, my setup was a slightly modded stock config that wasnt doing the job. Game of Thrones somehow seemed better at this point.

Great season, no mic no voice, hopefully be alive and kicking next season, hopefully put some practice in before the event.

Thanks again Wally your a legend for all the work you put in and the fact we just rock up and race, i certainly dont take it for granted, so thank you once again.

Thanks all for a great season.

All depends on the car you kind of need to do a couple practice starts. In the dtm I was abiut 3/4 throttle with clucth down then as lights go out I ease off the clutch keeping a little wheelspin then g4adually going up to full throttle assuming I havent bogged down or got too much wheel spin. Open mic always so you guys can here my shifts and get the shits.

In the group a I mostly had the tall gearing and so no matter what it would bog down and get a shocker every time. Its a bit of an art or ass to get good starts needing just the right amount of wheel spin as too much or not enough will give a poor launch.

My start in race 2?
Full noise, dump the clutch, hang on. 8)

The gearing just happened to be right (for 1st) so just a tad of wheelspin (to heat the tyres, of course ;)).
In real life, I was bouncin' valves through the hood! :P :P

Thanks for all the thanks guys. I enjoy doing it.

Race 1 was a blast at the start. There was some great pack racing going on, with a tight pack of 4 or 5 cars for ages. What a bummer that the replay doesn't cover that early excitement. I wonder if you could write a program which takes a copy of the cr file every 10 mins (assuming that the replay is playable at any time). Hmmmm...
I ended up behind GW for a while and nearly got caught out by his earlier braking about T4, avoiding the back of his car. After another lap or 2, I had to brake hard to avoid his car there and ended up spinning, and lost 3 places on the grass. Rolz had an off, I snuck past the inside of Butters at the fast right hand sequence, then GW had an off, so I climbed back a few places. That was an exciting race.

Race 2 we less eventful, a bit lonelier.

As to my race starts, in the group A anyway, I hold the revs about redline and then sort of feather the throttle as I dump the clutch, trying to stay on the edge of wheel spin. I normally get fairly good starts.

Firstly congratulations to Darren on taking the "Pat Phillip's Cup" in the inaugural AC Season.
Thanks to Wally for running another fun, well produced and delivered season.
SOrry for my tardiness on my reply...

I had the speed in straight lines in the DTM! A great car and a not so great driver... hehehe, I think my expectations were too high, and I over drove all the time... but has some fun runs, (learnt not to use the look l/r  :o it blows my mind!), but overall enjoying the company, the sim, what a package! Looking forward to next season.

Thanks for a fun season Wally :D i was only on reserve but still got 3 full rounds in.

Race 1 went really well for me (at first) went from 9th to 3rd in a couple of corners lol. then slowly through out the race as my tires wore out and became useless i went back to 11th :(

I changed to hard tires for Race 2 but i suddenly had a super high ping and left the race.. I checked it before the race and it was just fine. i really don't know why it randomly spikes like that (over 1000!). Once i left the server and came back it went back to normal and i completed 10 laps.

Sorry if i wrecked anyone with my bad ping. Some of the problem is that i share internet with 3 other people :(. We will be getting the NBN soon (not really sure when. I can see the tower from my house) and that will hopefully fix my internet troubles.

Here are the on-board videos (the boring parts cut) I recorded for both races.  I was terrible in Race 1 as you'll see...

awesome Guybrush! How did you manage to record the start? Was it just in the file?

I don't know if you had all the graphic prettiness turned up? looks like you have.. Cause you can go into the game settings and turn it all up and it will change in the replay. you can even change skins.

Yeah, that's great to see the start of the race for a change. Much more action. Is that a shadowplay thing? I've never used that.

we should put this on Twitch TV and make some money from it, as in the next live event we should broadcast.

Now I'm even more stoked about my two 4ths.
I just found out I was only getting about 90% throttle. :o
I thought I'd stuffed my gear choice, as a couple of people flew past me at the end of the straight.
Now it's explained (and it's not my engineering ;), just my hardware :().

What wingset did you run.

1 rear 3 front (but that shouldn't make a difference).
But the acc. pot is definately faulty.

Well it could make a difference, but not what I saw on wednesday night, I ran 1 and 2.... Im going to run some runs in a straight line speed test drag strip in game just for the hell of it using no wings and full wings, shall depend on what the longest drag strip is.
What pedals you using? I had the same problem with my t500

I used 3-1 wings for qualy but 3-2 for the race, the one thing with wings is not necessarily the lowest rear will give you the highest top speed as this may be limited by gearing and also the exit speed out of the last turn at mugello. If its too loose at the rear you may be a few kmh slower onto the straight which is more then you may make up with less drag. I was also geared hitting the rev limiter the last few meters before the t1 brake point and I actually think I may have been on the limiter longer with 2 rear wing but I didnt compare telemetry of both but may run a couple laps both ways on soft tyres to get a proper test.

I still found I was a few tenths quicker with 1 at the rear but was more consistant with a more planted rear end through the twistier sections. At Monza I also found less rear wing was loosing me quite a bit of mid corner speed so I used a bit more wing there but was quite off pace anyway in traffic most of the race then.

Am I wrong in thinking the suspension differences between front and back also add to the drag effect? I'm not sure if it was placebo but I noticed lifting the suspension on the rear got my more stability through the twisty sections.

I'd need to check but from memory my suspension was 2-3 front and 5 at the back.  My wings were 3-4 for the race  :o

I did repeat tests when we were at Monza and couldn't get any difference in speed across the start/finish regardless of wing!

Rake angle with basic ride height and also suspension stiffness should have an effect downforce and drag. If the cars rake angle is lower at the front to the rear then this will increase the wing angles and also the body itself will create some more downforce as more of it will be hitting the air. Also difference in stiffness from front to rear will effect how much the cars weight shifts under braking and acceleration effecting rake angle. A stiffer rear should keep the front down creating more df and drag on acceleration in a straight also making the weight shift forward a bit quicker under braking.

How much this effects each car may be quite different and also to what limit dynamic aero is applied in AC its hard to tell. Technically a car with more rear wing and a softer rear couod have less drag then a stiffer rear car same wing or even less rear wing. As you accelerate the rear will compress and also the rear df will push the rear down. Reducing the rake angle and also the wing angles if the rear ends up dropping more then the stiffer lower wing. Under braking the rear will still rise and so give more aero at the rear and so balance the grip more rearward still so more prone to understeer on entry.

I really havent checked too mich how this is all implemented in ac but if you enable dev apps and check the aero and suspension you should see if df and drag are changing at the same time as the rake angle is being effected under accleration and braking.

I also tried a few different wing angles in the Monza round and found it not effecting my top speed im the way I expected. But my speed in the parabolica was much quicker with more rear wing as it was quite loose with less there and the time lost on exit wasnt made up with less drag on the straight. Very similar to the last corner at Mugello with a similar result for me.

It depends how soft your suspension and dampers are, but I normally find that raising the rear slightly will stop the rear end loosing traction mid turn and on exit.  I guess this is because the weight of the car is more gradual in leaning on and off the tyre when there is more room/height to do so.

Technically, a lower ride height should be beneficial mid-corner, by lowering the CoG and therefore lateral transfer.
But it is very much dependant on the ARB/spring/damper combo.
Likewise, if the car is loose in a med-high speed corner, stiffening the rear ARB can provide more grip by transfering more weight to the inside wheel, as opposed to the common conception of softer=more grip (this is generally true for low speed corners).

I prefer over-damped low speed settings and stiff ARB which allow for a slightly softer spring (for grip) without compromising platform stability.

Ride height for aero is predominantly governed by the floor configuration, ie. splitter size, flat floor, diffuser, etc. although there are effects from the upper-body.
