This is a place to share ideas for future seasons.

  • Nissan GTR Nismo, single make with ballast.
  • Toyota 86, single make with ballast.
  • I'd also like to do a GT3 season. Pick a car and stay with it. Longer races with pitstops, with the rule that you have to do at least x number of race laps on soft tyres. I could change my results app to add a 10 second post-race time penalty if you fail to comply.

Reply to this thread to sign up for season 8, racing the Lotus Evora GX and GTC.

The season will run for 6 weeks, from Aug 11 to Sep 15. And yes, Zandvoort will be one of the tracks.

You must drive one car of your choice in the first half of the season, and the other car in the second half (compulsory car change).

Format
15 min sprint followed by 30 min race (reverse top 10 from 1st qual, rest the same) with 1 pitstop. Fuel multiplier and tyre multiplier in race 2 = 4.2x.
Two rounds will be 50 min races with 1 pitstop (fuel and tyre multiplier = 2.4x)

Schedule
R1, Aug 11: Imola - 9 laps, 17 laps
R2, Aug 18: Zandvoort - 9 laps, 18 laps [track download, 30 pit boxes]
R3, Aug 25: Silverstone - 24 laps (50 min)
-- Compulsory car swap --
R4, Sep 1: Nurburgring GP - 8 laps, 15 laps
R5, Sep 8: Mugello - 8 laps, 17 laps
R6, Sep 15: Spa - 21 laps (50 min)

Start Times
All times are EASTERN standard time.

Practice: 7:30pm, 60 mins
Qualifying 1: 8:30pm, 20 mins
Race 1: 8:50pm

Ballast
Success ballast will be  used as per the BTCC. At the start of a round, the top 10 in the season standings will get ballast, and then the top 10 finishers of race 1 will get success ballast for race 2.

Race 2 grid will be set by race 1 finish order.

75kgs – 66kgs – 57kgs – 48kgs – 39kgs – 33kgs – 27kgs – 21kgs – 15kgs – 9kgs

Points
15 min race, 24 points down.
30 min race, 48 points down.
50 min race, 72 points down.

Bonus points and penalties are 2x and 3x in the longer races.

  • Team points are the accumulation of the individual team member's points. If a reserve stands in for an absent team member, they score points for the team.
  • Each driver's worst round is dropped, and the worst team round is also dropped.
  • Fastest lap bonus: 1 points awarded at the end of each race for the driver who sets the fastest lap time.
Penalties
  • If a driver hits someone carelessly in turns 1 or 2 at the start of a race and it pushes them off the track or spins them, they get a 4 point penalty, and the driver hit will get a 4 point bonus. You still have to redress any gained positions.
  • If a driver gets two turn 1 or 2 penalties in a season, they will have to skip the first qualifying session of the next round and start the race from the back of the grid.
  • No other penalties will apply. The usual respect for other drivers and redressing unfairly gained positions will be expected as always.
Rules
  • Track Limits. The Pit Lane Penalty app is mandatory. More than 3 cuts will result in a 10 second post-race penalty. Details of the app are here: http://www.xgn.com.au/index.php?topic=758.0
  • Redress. If you gain position advantage over another driver by colliding with them such that their car leaves the track, or by cutting the track yourself, you are expected to redress your position as soon as safely possible. Gaining position by "reasonable" side-by-side contact is allowed, but rear collisions must be avoided. This won't be enforced. It is an honour system.
  • Track Re-entry. You must always re-enter the track with extreme caution. Any collision on re-entry must be redressed.
  • Assists. Driving assists like ABS and TC can be used only if available on the car. There is no forced driving view.
  • Map and Mirrors. To assist in knowing where other cars are around you and on track (especially for leaving pits and re-entering the track after a spin), it is recommended to use the virtual mirror (F11) and turn on the track map which shows the nearby cars.
  • Tyres. There are no restrictions on tyre choice.

Australian Assetto Corsa League, Tuesday nights / The Ballast Thread
« on: August 02, 2015, 12:07:43 AM »
Here's how the ballast worked, to good effect, in our old netKar PRO league, fro your information. This is what I'll be doing in AC as well, when we decide to use ballast. This is a proven technique that worked well for years in our netKar PRO league. We won't necessarily be using ballast every season.

The important stuff

In a nutshell, the faster you are in a race, the next race you will carry more ballast to slow you down. If you're not so fast, you might lose ballast. Your ballast changes from race to race (not round to round). The more often you adjust the ballast, the more accurate it becomes.

At the end of each race, my program works out the average fastest race lap time for each racer, who was within 6% of the fastest lap time (this excludes lap times of people who are too slow, so that everyone else doesn't get masses of ballast piled on). Basically, the faster your best lap time is compared to the average, the more ballast you get. The slower your best lap time is compared to the average, the less ballast you get.

How much ballast?

The amount of ballast you need to achieve a certain percentage slow down in lap time varies from car to car (as cars are different weights). This base amount gets set by experimentation before round 1 of a season and then gets refined each round as we see how different people are slowed down, on average, by the ballast in practice. Some people will be slowed down more by the same amount of ballast; some less, due to driving style. It all gets average out.

Bonus points

The ballast tightens up the field, but people who are carrying more ballast get bonus points, e.g. 0.5 points for every 25kg of ballast. This way, faster people are still rewarded on the leader board.

The fine print

If a racer didn't get to complete 4 laps or more in a race, their ballast won't change for the next race, because they haven't done enough laps to calculate a decent average. This avoids unexpected skewing of your ballast.

In the first two rounds, your ballast can jump up and down a bit before it settles on an average. To "smooth out" ballast changes after the first two rounds, your ballast changes are reduced to 70% of the calculated ballast change. This stops your ballast from jumping too dramatically up or down. E.g. if it's calculated that you need 100kg of extra ballast after the first two rounds, the program will only give you 70% of this i.e. 70kg. Likewise for decreases.

An example

Here's what happens in my program after a race:

The average fastest race lap was 1:47.639. Looking at Guybrush's line, his best time was 1:45.691, which was 1.948 seconds faster than the average. As a result, he gets 46kg of extra ballast for the next race (he started on 0).

The people like Rob who were slower than the average (0.272 seconds slower, in Rob's case), lose some ballast from their starting weight.

Assetto Corsa / Racing tonight (Friday)
« on: July 31, 2015, 06:31:06 PM »
I'll be up for some racing tonight, dudes. I'll come looking on Marty's servers about 8:30ish.

967
2 x 12 laps

Qualifying at 8:30pm Eastern.

Choose either the GTC or the GX in race 1, then drive the other car in race 2. When you join up for race 1, try to choose a car that evens out the numbers on the server so far.

Racing general / R.I.P A1 Pedals
« on: July 26, 2015, 03:14:12 PM »
My trusty Advantage A1 pedals that served me well for 8 or 9 years have finally given up the ghost. I'd noticed that my pedals kept going only to about 90%, even after I kept calibrating them. The range of movement was getting smaller and smaller. I opened up the case, and found that the throttle pedal was actually cracked and bending at its pivot point inside the case, so I was just bending the pedal more and more instead of turning the pot, hence not getting to 100%.

So now I've gone to the Thrustmaster pedals that came with my wheel. Rock steady pedal input now, and a good range of motion. The brake pedal has got some kind of pseudo-brakecell mod, with a rubber pad and a stiffer spring at the end of the travel, which will take a little getting used to. But so far, so good.

969
2 x 11 lap races.

In the first race, everyone will be in the Lotus 2 Eleven.

For the second race, the slowest half of the field, going by race 1 qualifying, will take the Lotus 2 Eleven GT4, while the top half stays in the Lotus 2 Eleven. Keep an eye on where are you are in the qualifying order - it will be up to you to choose the correct car for the next race.

Again, the idea is to refine your season 8 car vote if you want to.

Assetto Corsa / AC server browser android app
« on: July 19, 2015, 10:52:35 PM »
Following on from Guybrush's suggestion to have a quick way of seeing who's online, I've made a start on an Android app to do just that. This is where it's at so far - the beginnings. There's still quite a way to go. I want to add more information, let you expand a row to see who's actually online, let you search for servers... maybe get notifications when someone comes online on a server you're watching (maybe - that seems a bit difficult so far, but I haven't started unravelling that one).

If you have any suggestions or wishlist items, let me know.

971
This is the first of 3 season 8 car trials, the idea being to try the three front-running combos in the poll and then allow people to adjust their votes if they want. They'll all be at Vallelunga.

Abarth 500 EsseEsse S1 at Vallelunga Club (20 laps), then at Vallelunga (10 laps, reverse top 10 from qual 1).
Normal tyre wear and fuel.
Qual at 8:00 Eastern.

Australian Assetto Corsa League, Tuesday nights / Season 8 Car Poll
« on: July 08, 2015, 08:43:04 PM »
Four options (or classes) to choose from. You can choose up to two of your preferred options.

1. Pagani Zonda R
Fast, race-spec car, lots of setup options, soft, medium, hard tyres.
Single make series.

2. Lotus Evora GTC and Lotus Evora GX
Mid-range race cars, pretty much the same in performance.
Drive each car for half the  season.

3. Lotus 2 Eleven and Lotus 2 Eleven GT4
Handicap option: The top half of the starters get the slower Lotus 2 Eleven, the bottom half of the starters get the faster GT4. This is pretty much like ballast in a single make. There's roughly 2 seconds difference in lap time over a 1:40 lap. There's usually much more than a 2 second gap between fastest and slowest in our races.

4. Abarth EsseEsse Step 1
Slow road car with enough power to slide.
Single make series.

We can have some trial races in any of the options to see how they pan out, and people can change their votes. AC 1.2 may well surface this month too, so the timing on that might have a bearing on how many trial races we have before the season starts.

974
This is a single race, with 2 pitstops needed (2.8x fuel and tyres), for triple points.
