Title: Melbourne GP Catch up?
Post by: Guybrush Threepwood on February 27, 2016, 09:12:34 PM
Hi guys.

Phil.8 and I were chatting and we will both be at the GP in a few weeks time.  We'll no doubt cross paths, but thought we'd put a shout out to anyone else in Melbourne who would be interested in catching up for a beer that weekend.  Perhaps even a bit of head to head sim racing might be in order if we can find somewhere!

Let us know.

Cheers.

I wasnt sure of the date of the GP but just checked and got a friends wedding on that day so wont be able to make the gp. Would be nice to have another meet up some other time even have a basic kart nite or something with all the Victorians.

How was the wet track? will they end up qualifing in rain and maybe starting dry on race day?

hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow and the qualifying will be dry, if its wet like today they will probably qual sunday morning like they did a couple of years ago. was fun watching them on the wet track

I hope we get a sprinkle of rain for qual as it will give Ricciardo a better chance.  I'd say the same for the race, but the forecast is a sunny day.  Practice 3 today should be full of action if it's dry.

Gee the V8 race last night was a cracker!  Go Gisy! :)

You should find the CAMS F4 stand, they have a simulator hotlap comp on. ;)

Not much changed from last year by the looks (except qually). Mercedes first, daylight second........RedBull may regret their dummy spit over getting a competitive engine.
Title: Re: Melbourne GP Catch up?
Post by: marty on March 19, 2016, 06:12:44 PM
Qualy is pretty crappy, way less laps run by all cars then in last years format. Main thing they should change ASAP is to allow the drivers to complete a lap they have started. Q3 would also be better off left as it was with no elimination as it will just be a 1 lap shootout pretty much as is with harldy anyone likely to bother with a 2nd lap. Only the cars in the top 4 really have time for a second lap and thats at a track with a fairly short lap the longer tracks will be even worse.
Title: Re: Melbourne GP Catch up?
Post by: slideways on March 19, 2016, 06:15:16 PM
And take into consideration, there are a heap of tracks the SS tyres won't last more than a lap. Going to make the new format a little interesting. Agree though, Qually 3 should be the old format.
Title: Re: Melbourne GP Catch up?
Post by: grat on March 19, 2016, 07:18:23 PM
Q3 could be savaged by giving them two sets of the softest compounds to be used only in Q3 (as opposed to one only as is now), but in any case the old school system seems so much better.... But I agree that Q1 might become really crazy at tracks where softer compounds do not allow for two laps (traffic was quite crazy).

As for the state of the competition: at parity of track grip, in Q3 the Mercedes-Ferrari gap was in the order of .5 of a sec. It is a lot, but it is much less than last year (1.4) and Melbourne is quite a traction and engine track. So it might be a bit less bad than it looked live. On the other hand, what seems worrying is the consistent 1 second gap in Q2. That sounds like Ferrari's engines can't afford to push all-in for more than 1 lap a day (Toro Rosso with the 2015 spec engine could keep up until Q3 started) while Mercedes's magic button can now be kept on for the whole Saturday. If this is reflected on race pace, then we are heading for a pretty boring championship, as Roseberg seems more confused than ever (3 big mistakes in 2 days and... what? 40 laps? I personally like the guy, but that is not really world champion level driving)

Have to agree. Pictures of drivers like Vettel (who was in 2nd at the time) walking away from Q3 while still more than 4 minutes to go is not a good look.

And, drivers were being eliminated sitting in the pits. What a joke.

I liked the comment Brundle made after it, "Lewis could've waved his own chequered flag". ::)

I went to a session later in the evening with Martin Brundle and David Coulthard.  They were scathing of the new qual format.   They think we may have witnessed a once off...  I'm sure they'll persist with it for another race or two though.

The biggest problem at the track was that we didn't have any graphics on screen telling us who was in the drop zone, how much time was left, or the order, etc. You could imagine how confused everyone was trying to make sense out of what the confused commentators were saying!

Yep, at the track.  I didn't see the F4 stand though, where is that?  I had a go on the IVECO sim which was running codemasters F1 game.   Haven't driven it before and only got 3 laps vs others who obviously have played it on their xboxs etc. But managed to go 6th quickest of all drivers at the time.  The biggest problem was the car being setup for massive understeer... Yuck!

Geez, even when things go horribly wrong for Hamilton, he finishes second, let's hope he doesn't have much luck or it's a forgone conclusion... :-[ Gotta say though, great race by Ricciardo.

Im pretty sure if there was a halo device he wouldnt have got out of that on his own. But its kind of amazing with so much damage and the car doing a couple rolls and possibly flying into the fence he had nothing contact his head woth the current open cockpit.

I still think the halo as proposed looks crap and wont do much.

The one proposed by red bull after seeing ferrari test a mockup seems more logical and safer.

But either device would be very tricky for a driver to get out from a car that ends up like Fernando's in Melbourne.

RBR's looks better, that's for sure, and I'm sure, even if the perspex was to shatter, it would take some of the energy out of the object and prevent any fatal injury to the driver.  Plus you could actually get out of the car.

Ferrari's looks like it obstructs the driver's visibility too.

The Ferrari one would've done nothing at all for Massa, the RBR one would have.

The one closest to the camera on the right has shown he can crush a can with bis bare hands. That may be the limit of his superpowers but zooming in showing those alien bits also gives some info. The front 2 are also clones with the other one maybe being their mum back right.  ;D

The trickiest part that is throwing us all off here is that Phil's wife is wearing GB's white hat for the photo. Had he worn his own hat and the racing suit (aka Mankini) that was confiscated at the gate then we would pick him out easily the only other xgn person is Phil who has already pointed himself out.

Ok, I'll have my go at it. The two at the front look more like brothers than the third on the back. So this means GB should be one of them. All we know about GB is that he is like 33, his name is Justin, has a kid, and wakes up early morning to manage an employment help for people with disabilities (or something not too far from this). All this is quite irrelevant to distinguish between the two brothers. So I go for the last thing I know about GB: he spends a lot of time in front of a computer monitor. Since the one on the left looks fitter, I'll say GB is the one on the right.

Haha like the thinking Grat. I do remember GB saying his brother is 40 and likes Lego, and the dude on the right does look older. The dude on the left looks younger than me and I'm also 33, so I'm thinking left is GB :D
